Ever since Tom Holland bagged the role of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he became the youngest actor ever to play the role of the Wall-Crawler. The Avengers: Infinity War actor does not have to look back as he is the new rising star of Hollywood. Time and again he has showcased his range as an actor and how versatile he can be. Holland’s efforts were acknowledged as he has won a BAFTA and three Saturn awards.
The English actor is not only renowned for his acting chops but also his dancing skills as he got the role of Billy Elliot in Billy Elliot the Musical. However, before making it big in the movie industry, he suffered from alcohol addiction. Tom Holland acknowledged this vice of his when he was a guest on a popular podcast.
Tom Holland Talks About His Alcohol Addiction
During an episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Tom Holland was present on the podcast, where he did not shy away to talk about the fact that he was an alcohol addict at one point in his career.
“I was definitely addicted to alcohol, not shying away from that at all. I think that anyone that has a beer everyday has probably got a little bit of a problem.”
Holland added, how consuming large amounts of alcohol would make one regret them, as he would wake up with a nasty headache, regretting his decision of having “that last beer.”
“And then you would just reach that moment where you’re like ‘Wow, I shouldn’t have had that last beer.’ And you wake up the next day and you have a terrible headache.”
The Impossible actor continued how his daily alcohol consumption made him question himself. He would “drink and drink and drink and drink” until breaking point, and then wake up in the morning with “a terrible headache.”
“Why am I enslaved this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?”
He continued that he could not enjoy any events until he has a few beers for himself, and how not having any alcohol would put him under immense pressure.
“I would look back and recognize that I would go to events for work, and, you know, I can’t enjoy myself until I’ve had a few beers, and I just felt so much pressure. I didn’t feel like I could go and not have a drink because of the stress of it.”
However, Tom Holland took the right step and decided to walk away from his alcohol addiction as he can not live like that and must do something about it.
“Mate, you’ve got to pull your socks up here. You can’t just live in your house all the time, you’ve got to go out and enjoy yourself. And if you’re only enjoying yourself because you’re drinking, then you really do have a problem.”
Even though Tom Holland found himself enslave to booze, he decided to cut off drink by being sober for the next six months.
Tom Holland’s Turning Point In Life
In the same podcast, Tom Holland stated that he reached a pivotal point in his life, as he celebrated his birthday last month, he set a target for himself to see if can hit “six months without alcohol” to prove he doesn’t “have a problem.”
The actor continued that by 1st June, he was a changed man, and how he had never felt so happy in life, sleeping much better, and living a much healthier life.
“And by the time I got to June 1, I was the happiest I’ve ever been in my life… I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter.”
Tom Holland is not only sober for six months but to remain sober, he has decided to distance himself from the rugby community as they try to get uproariously tipsy. And that is the best decision he has ever taken.
“I just felt so much pressure, and this is one of the [reasons] why I’ve sort of distanced myself from the rugby community ’cause so much of it is about how much can you drink. ‘Let’s get you as drunk as possible’. It’s honestly been the best thing I’ve ever done.”
The Crowded Room actor’s decision to go sober has not only improved his life but also inspired his mother to also go sober.
