What audiences get to see on the screen is the result of the great toil put into a movie by its actors, filmmakers, writers, and everyone else involved in the making of the film. If anyone’s work is halted, the entire production suffers. Currently, this is the case with the highly anticipated Star Wars film, which has been in development for quite a while.
The film’s writer, Taika Waititi, is currently facing struggles in completing the script. However, in an interview, Waititi explained the reason for his delayed progress. He had previously offered insight into his script-writing process.
Taika Waititi explains the reason for his work delay
Taika Waititi is a renowned name in the film industry, excelling in multiple roles as an actor, filmmaker, and comedian. With such a diverse career, Waititi has an interesting Hollywood resume. Presently, he is busy writing the script for the Star Wars film, leaving many wondering about the completion timeline. In an interview, the writer elaborated on why his work on the Star Wars script is experiencing delays. Waititi stated,
“I’ve got a really good idea for it. It’s just as with all films, it’s this middle part. You’re like, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And then you look at all of those films that are so great, you’re like, ‘Well, I guess they can’t meet some smuggler with an alien sidekick.'”
Considering Waititi’s remarkable works like Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s reasonable to infer that he prefers perfection in his work. Thus, his work on the Star Wars script is likely to be worth the wait.
Taika Waititi reflects on his screenwriting trick
During the BAFTA Screenwriters’ Lecture Series, Taika Waititi shared insights into his writing process. The actor disclosed a little-known trick he employs. He writes a draft, sets it aside for a year, and then lets another 2-3 years pass. Waititi humorously remarked,
“I’ll come back to it and I’ll read it and I’m like ‘Who wrote this sh*t.’ And then I will read it like maybe 2-3 times and then I will throw that away.”
He explained that he then rewrites the script from the beginning, based on his memory of what he read. Waititi acknowledged that while this process is helpful, it takes “way longer than anyone wants to do.”
Perhaps, this can be one of the reasons for his delayed work on the Star Wars script.
