With his last MCU project Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 about to release, James Gunn is officially cutting ties with Marvel for the time being and starting his new job as director of DC. After the official announcement was made late last year, most fans seemed a little divided even with his The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker success in DC. The reason behind that seems to be his unwillingness to work with some of the established DCEU actors, such as Henry Cavill and so on.
On the other hand, he seems to want to bring in some otherwise relatively unimportant characters to realize his dream of creating an interconnected DCEU through upcoming movies and series. And fans seem to think one of these characters has a massive chance of being none other than Emilia Harcourt played by James Gunn’s wife Jennifer Holland. Well, given her presence in both of James Gunn’s previous live-action projects it will be interesting to see if fans are on the right track here.
James Gunn benches Henry Cavill’s Superman
Henry Cavill seemed extremely excited to reprise his role as Clark Kent once again. Something he also commented on after a surprise cameo in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. However, after Gunn’s takeover, he shortly informed through an Instagram post that he will not be returning. Expressing his sadness to part with the franchise he has held aloft for so long he noted that, “this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”
This was made especially awkward by the fact that just a couple of months ago after Black Adam‘s release he was asked by the studio to inform people that he will be returning as the Man of Steel. He said, “I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.” Elaborating further on his previous ‘that’s just life’ sentiment, he added, “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.” Inevitably this led to a lot of backlash for James Gunn, and after months he commented on it, saying, “We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never cast.”
For him, he explained it matters who he and the filmmakers want for each character, “And for me, for this story, it isn’t Henry.” He admittedly wants someone younger to play Superman to start the story at a previous point in the character’s life. Noting how he has already finished the drafts for Superman: Legacy, expected to release in 2025, he said that the movie will mark, “the true beginning of the DCU,” under the new phase named, Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Fans troll James Gunn for ditching Henry Cavill
Cavill’s abrupt departure from the franchise made numerous DC fans apprehensive of James Gunn’s reign in their favorite studio. Especially as Gunn also revealed later that not only Cavill, but the newly appointed Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, who was hailed worldwide for his magnificent portrayal of Gotham’s most famous vigilante, does not fit his vision for the new DCEU as well. And so does not Joaquin Phoenix with his Oscar-winning Joker performance. According to him, he dreams of a more interconnected world for the DCEU.
However, the repeated appearance of Emilia Harcourt, played by Jennifer Holland, aka, James Gunn’s wife in the last two projects he directed for DC, seems like a sign for DC fans as to how he is going to connect the universe. As such, fans are wondering if after The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker they will get to see Harcourt gracing the big screens once again this month when The Flash releases. And inevitably they took to Twitter to express their concerns over the “DCU pillars” returning to the screens once again.
Well, it will be interesting to see if the fans indeed turn out to be right when the movie hits the theaters. However, with the likes of James Gunn and Ben Affleck claiming it as one of the best superhero movies they have ever seen, it can be said that fans are in for a treat.
