‘Who asked for this?’: Mindy Kaling’s Velma Getting a 2nd Season Despite Insanely Bad Reviews Proves No Publicity is Bad Publicity

Since its release, Velma has been a lightning rod for controversies for its dark premise and egotistical and inconsiderate take on the beloved Scooby-Doo character, Velma. And even though the show has garnered severe criticism over its butchering of the iconic character, it appears the studios aren’t bothered by the hate until it’s pulling views.

Despite getting heavily bombed on the internet and ridiculed by a substantial portion of the audience, the Scooby-Doo spinoff has become a colossal success for HBO Max. And it seems that the studio isn’t done capitalizing on its negative criticisms.

Velma is moving forward with a new season despite controversies

Despite garnering a huge pile of criticisms, the R-rated animated show is officially moving toward a second season. The CEO and chairman of Warner Television Group, Channing Dungey, revealed their plethora of projects to Deadline, which are in development and it appears that one of them is Velma Season 2. Deadline stated,

“Dungey’s team is working on a second season of Scooby-Doo spinoff Velma, an adult animated comedy that comes from Mindy Kaling,”

Despite the criticisms, it seems that the executives at HBO Max are quite satisfied with the huge number of subscribers it’s garnering to the platform despite the backlash it’s receiving. And netizens haven’t shied away from sharing their distaste with the Studios’ decision to thrive on the hate and keep on butchering the beloved characters.

Although the HBO Max show has garnered huge numbers on the platform, and not for good reasons, the prime reason behind its excessive viewing numbers is hate-watching. And despite the excessive hate and review bombing campaigns against the show, it has ultimately resulted in HBO Max’s benefit.

And the confirmation of the second season was the straw that broke the camel’s back, as people are furious over the studio’s decision to capitalize on its hate rather than understanding why it was hated. Many Twitter users didn’t shy away from calling out their decision for green-lighting another season and shared their disgust over the matter.
