It is now common knowledge that James Gunn is working on a major overhaul of the DC franchise. First, there was Henry Cavill’s departure followed by Gal Gadot’s future being termed uncertain. Now, a whole fresh cast of actors are being auditioned to move the narratives forward with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan already chosen to play Superman and Lois Lane in Superman Legacy.
Along with these changes, DC also seems to be having an uncanny knack of revealing spoilers inadvertently before the release of their films. After the aura of The Flash was lessened by the revelation of many high profile cameos in the film, it looks like DC’s next film Blue Beetle is also bitten by the same bug and this time by the director Angel Manuel Soto himself.

Angel Manuel Soto Revealed A Big Character Death in Blue Beetle
DC’s next film Blue Beetle is set to release in August 2023. Directed by Mexican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto, the film follows the origin story of college graduate Jamie Reyes who gains superpowers when an alien scarab grafts onto him, forming a powerful exoskeleton around his body. Led by Xolo Maridueña, Blue Beetle has many interesting characters including Susan Sarandon who is touted to play the antagonist.
The film though, is gaining publicity for the wrong reasons with director Soto revealing a very important character death in one of his interviews. Soto who was prompted by an emotional response from the interviewer on his father’s death, confirmed that Alberto Reyes who is the father of Jamie Reyes aka Blue Beetle, will meet his end.
“No way. I’m getting goosebumps as you say that. That scene is close to my heart. I have not gone through the hardship that you went through, I can only imagine. And just imagining it, it’s heartbreaking for me. But your reaction was exactly what we were trying to achieve.”
Apart from Soto, lead actor Xolo Maridueña also confirmed the spoiler and said that his on-screen father’s death scene was one of his most favorite scenes in the film.
Blue Beetle Trailer Faces Flak for Batman Comment
The trailer of DC’s Blue Beetle is out and fans are eagerly looking for hints in the clip that will give them an idea about what to expect from the narrative. From the initial viewing, the film looks to follow young teenager Jamie Reyes’ journey as he struggles to figure out the workings of the Blue Scarab. Veteran actor Susan Sarandon, who is expected to be the antagonist Victoria Kord in the film, has also generated a lot of interest with her role.
But the information making negative headlines and criticism from the public is the comment at the end of the trailer by Jamie Reyes’s family member played by George Lopez. When Reyes compares the exploration of a base to the iconic DC superhero Batman’s world, Lopez’s character replies with the statement,
“Batman’s a fascist.”
Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto does not seem to be perturbed by the furor created by this comment in the trailer and has only responded with a laughing emoji and nothing else.
