DC has a reputation for being more gore and darker than Marvel comics. Although Marvel has established one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood, DC fans have always taken pride in its adult themes. And the new co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn has said that he would not hesitate to keep mature themes for projects under the new DCU.
As he disclosed the first chapter of his new DCU plan, ‘Gods and Monsters,’ he said that he would do everything according to the story. He also talked about if required, the upcoming projects would continue to follow the mature DC theme.
James Gunn is Open to Mature Ratings For DC Projects
James Gunn revealed the first chapter of the new DCU plan this week. He is planning to introduce some new characters and continue with popular characters like Superman and Batman in the first chapter of the DCU. The filmmaker did not forget to talk about the ratings of the upcoming films.
Gunn said that he would try his best to keep the projects PG-13. However, he is also open to keeping more mature ratings if the project requires it. Talking about one of the projects under his plan, Superman: Legacy, he said, “Superman is definitely something that we would like to be PG-13. I’m going to make sure that it is.”
The Guardians of the Galaxy director also said that it would depend on the story, and he would give it everything it deserves. Although he said that the Waller TV show could be a little bit more mature, there are other shows and movies that aim at “young women or kids.”
James Gunn also said that every project would “back into the Supermans, and The Brave and the Bold,” which would be appropriate for everyone to see. The new DCU plan includes animation shows, TV shows, and movies.
He also said that projects like Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker would continue to exist in “DC Elseworlds.” His first DC film, Suicide Squad, earned an R rating due to some adult references in the film. And its spin-off featuring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is also expected to follow the same mature theme.
James Gunn Wants to Create a Star Wars-Like Universe
James Gunn has had the benefit of working with DC and Marvel. While announcing the new DCU plan, he said that DC and Marvel have always been different. Gunn claimed that the new DCU is a “lot more planned out” than the MCU.
He also said that he is planning to create a Star Wars-like universe with “different times, and different places, different things” and characters that are a bit morally complex. Gunn also said that while working at Marvel Studios with Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, he learned a lot of things.
And one of these things include not giving up. He shared how the executives give their everything to make a project successful, and he will do the same as the co-CEO of DC Studios. “It’s going to take a while, it’s going to take a bit of explanation,” he said.
He also claimed that people would understand what the DCU is by the time Superman: Legacy comes out. While he is planning to keep the consistency among the future projects of the DCU, Gunn also said that he wants fans to enjoy the shows and movies independently.
Superman: Legacy is expected to be the first official DC Studios film and is expected to come out in July 2025.
