Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the sequel of the famous DC Studios film featuring Zachary Levi in the lead role. It is a superhero film based on the DC comic book character Shazam. Despite a star-studded and talented cast, the film failed to make an impact on the audience leading to poor box office results.
It follows the story of a teenage boy Billy Batson, who is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam (Hounsou) to be his new champion Shazam, an adult superhero with various superpowers. In the sequel, he and his foster siblings would fight with the Daughters of Atlas.
The failure of the film at the theatres seems to the impacted various reasons, however, it has made actor Zachary Levi’s future as Shazam is very doubtful.
DC hero Zachary Levi talks about his film Shazam! Fury of the Gods
The poor earning of DC film Shazam! Fury of the Gods is only next to the box office bomb The Flash featuring Ezra Miller, Ben Affleck, and Michael Keaton. Shazam 2 has become one of the least-earning movies in the DC universe. The poor performance has also put the lead actor’s career as the superhero at risk. There are chances that it would be Levi’s last film as a comic book star.
However, the post-credits scene hinted at the possibility of Billy Batson teaming up with Justice Society indicating Levi’s probable future in DC studios.
Despite the uncertainty, the actor believes in the potential of his film.
Zachary Levi also took a stand for his film Shazam: Fury of the Gods as he shared that people will watch the film later and realize it was a good film.
“It’ll be one of those things that people will go back and watch, on home streaming or on a plane or whatever, and they’ll be like ‘Well, wait a minute!’”

Future of Zachary Levi’s DC movie Shazam
Among the numerous films slated for 2023, there are a few DC Studio projects. Naming them in order of release is, Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. All of these movies are released after the new DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Safran have taken office. The new heads have maintained that there are no talks about rejecting any of the previous stars and movies in the new phase. However, the biggest change we saw this year was the exit of Henry Cavill’s Superman. There are also no developments on Wonder Woman 3.
Hence, it has placed Shazam in quite a tricky situation, with no certainty of the actor coming back for the role.
Talkin about the same, Levi once shared with The Hollywood Reporter,
“My responsibility is just to show up and be the best Shazam that I can be, and I take that very seriously. I’ve known Peter for years, and James even longer, and I think they’re going to be really great leaders. I think James is a very talented visionary person and so I’m looking forward to whatever that holds.”
He added,
“I’m very happy with this movie. I hope it’s not my last.”
The film’s co-writer Henry Gayden shared his opinion on the sequel of the DC film,
“We both (Gayden and co-writer Chris Morgan) think the plans are dope. As far as Shazam moving forward, they’ve said that, if this movie does well, then we can continue in their universe. So it’s really kind of contingent on this weekend, and the next weekend and the weekend after that.”
Shazam: Fury of the Gods grossed only $133 million, making it one of the lowest-rated movies of the DC Universe.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is available for streaming on Max.
