The Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial made several headlines after The Tourist star sued his ex-wife. The trial proved to be a turning point for both of them, as Depp lost several projects, and Heard seems to have lost her entire acting career. While his ex-wife is trying to stay out of the public eye after losing the defamation case, the 59-year-old actor is making his way back to the big screen with the French movie Jeanne du Barry.
Johnny Depp portrays Louis XV in the upcoming film that follows the relationship between French king Louis XV and his lover, Jeanne du Barry, who was allowed to live in Versailles Palace despite not being a noble.
Johnny Depp Making a Comeback With Jeanne du Barry
Followed by the defamation trial against his ex-wife, Johnny Depp is set to make his comeback with the French movie Jeanne du Barry. He has had several film and TV appearances after he won the legal battle against Amber Heard in June last year.
He has since appeared on MTV Video Music Awards and an appearance at Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty fashion show. The Alice in Wonderland star also voiced an animated character in Johnny Puff: Secret Mission. Jeanne du Barry is his first live-action film featuring the American actor as a lead since winning the defamation trial against his ex-wife.
The French film is now slated to premiere on the opening night of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Maïwenn, the film will have its world premiere on May 16, 2023. Apart from directing the film, Maïwenn will also star as the lead alongside Depp.
The Cannes Film Festival is also expected to feature Killers of the Flower Moon and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, its Official Selection is yet to be revealed, which will be announced on April 13.
Johnny Depp Will Speak in French Throughout the Film
The French film featuring Johnny Depp and Maïwenn in the lead will mark the first time the Hollywood star will be speaking French throughout the film. While Jeanne du Barry does serve as his comeback, earlier reports suggested that the lead stars of Jeanne du Barry are not getting along very well.
Actor Bernard Montiel claimed during his appearance on a French talk show that although Depp is an amazing actor, sometimes he can be hard to work with. He claimed that the director and Depp got into conflicts due to their time slots. The official release date for Depp’s comeback is not revealed yet. However, Jeanne du Barry is expected to release by September 2023.
