Well, that’s what happened between Matt Damon and his partner Minnie Driver. In what seemed to be a power move but also not good for Damon, the actor appeared in an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. During the shooting of the interview, Driver and Damon had been dating for more than a year and people were well aware of their romance.

For reasons unknown, Oprah Winfrey asked The Martian actor about his relationship status. Without missing a beat, the actor simply stated that he was single at the moment. The harrowing thing was that his then-girlfriend Minnie Driver wasn’t aware of this decision and she too found out about the breakup when she saw Damon on live television. The effects of this breakup were quite devastating but Minnie Driver managed to hold herself up somewhat.

As soon as Damon announced the breakup on live television, reporters and news outlets were all over the couple for some stories. Minnie Driver got the worst of the situation since she essentially got dumped and the world wanted desperately to know why. In an interview with the Los Angeles Timesthe actress had nothing much to say about the whole ordeal except her anger.

“It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah. It seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate. Of course, he was busy declaring his love for me on David Letterman a month previously.”

Matt Damon later on went to marry Luciana Barroso in 2005 and they both have been happily married since. As for Minnie Driver, the actress’ current partner is American filmmaker Addison O’Dea and the two seem to be doing great too.
