Paul Rudd has been making headlines ever since the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Rudd is known across the globe for his iconic portrayal of Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are no double thoughts in stating that there could be no one better to play the role of Ant-Man, as Rudd’s humor and persona aligns perfectly with the size-changing superhero. Rudd’s portrayal of Ant-Man was indeed praiseworthy. But the actor recently shared the instance where he was asked to stop speaking down about his MCU character by Marvel heads.
Paul Rudd’s Son Was Unaware Of Ant-Man And So Was He
The I Love You, Man star expressed that he always hated talking about his on-screen characters. In a podcast, Rudd shared that he was not very familiar with the franchise and its storyline before getting cast. He added it was weird to explain the character of Ant-Man and the makers were equivalently aware of this. Rudd shared how he was instructed to not make fun of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man while he talked about it in the public.
“Explaining what Ant-Man was, it seemed silly. And it was obviously something I think even Marvel was aware of because it was like, ‘OK, when you talk about this, don’t make fun of it’.”
Paul Rudd opened up on his experience of sharing his superhero role with his 8-year-old kid, who was completely unaware of the very existence of Ant-Man.
“I told my son, who was eight years old at the time, that I’d been cast as a superhero in Marvel’, and he goes, ‘who are you playing?’, and I said, ‘Ant-Man’, and he said, ‘who? Ant-Man?’. And I go, ‘well, he shrinks down to the size of an ant’ – and by the way, I’m laughing as I’m saying it. His response was, ‘I can’t wait to see how stupid that’ll be’. But it was more in reference to me than the actual property of Ant-Man. He was like, ’you’re gonna play a superhero?’.”
Marvel Urged Paul Rudd To Not Speak Down On His Character
The Living With Yourself star revealed that he was asked not to speak ill of his character by Marvel. On being questioned if he is on an anti-promotional tour for his projects, Rudd added that he is always on one as he stated his inclination and nature to never sell anything.
“And afterward, Marvel is like, ‘great, but hey… when you’re talking about it, maybe don’t shit on it. Just until people learn what it is’… My entire career, I’m on an anti-promotional tour. My inclination in everything is never to sell anything. If anything it’s always to submarine it. And maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t like doing press or anything.”
Rudd continued as he shared his inner thoughts on being repetitively asked to describe his role.
“It’s like, ‘tell us about your new project’, and no matter what ‘my new project’ is, I always think, like, ‘why the f*ck do you guys want to talk about this?. I don’t wanna talk about this’. There’s always the question like, ‘what do you hope audiences take away?’, and I’m like, ‘I don’t know!’ I’d rather talk about what you’re up to, or something completely separate from anything.”
It seems that despite down-speaking his character, Rudd managed to win the hearts of many across the globe. Many believe it is the casual and humorous nature of the superstar that has made his representation of Ant-Man iconic.
Fans can enjoy Rudd’s performance in the recently-released Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is currently playing out in theaters.
