Johnny Depp and Amber Heard dominated the Internet the previous year.
After Heard’s op-ed appeared in the Washington Post, the former couple became embroiled in a public trial in which Depp accused his ex-wife of defamation. The actress stated that she had experienced domestic abuse. Despite the fact that she did not specifically name Depp in the essay, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor felt it damaged his reputation.
Because Depp and Heard’s testimonies conflicted with each other, the complicated case left many viewers baffled. The infamous trial is currently being explained in the three-part documentary Depp v Heard on Netflix (now streaming). The series compares the two actors’ testimonies while interviewing online celebrities who closely followed the trial.
Additionally, according to leaked texts from Johnny Depp, the Alice in Wonderland actor called himself a “f**king savage” for assaulting his ex-wife.
What Did the Leaked Johnny Depp Texts Reveal?
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard got married in 2015, but they divorced only after 15 months (as per PEOPLE). The actress paid her ex-husband $1 million, which Depp was “pledging and will donate to charities”.
Heard also declared that she was “disappointed” and “heartbroken” by the verdict after the trial. On Good Morning America, a juror justified their decision to support the Cry-Baby actor, saying:
“A lot of Amber’s story didn’t add up. The majority of the jury felt she was more the aggressor. The crying, the facial expressions that she had, the staring at the jury. All of us were very uncomfortable.”
According to previously leaked records acquired by The Daily Beast, Stephen Deuters, Depp’s then-assistant, texted Heard earlier about the 60-year-old actor kicking her:
“If someone was truly honest with him about how bad it really was, he would be appalled. I’m sad he does not have a better way to really know the severity of his actions yesterday. Unfortunately for me, I remember them in full, in full detail, everything that happened. He was appalled, when I told him he kicked you, he cried.”
According to the court records, Depp allegedly wrote to Heard:
“Once again, I find myself in a place of shame and regret. Of course I am sorry…I will never do it again…My illness somehow crept up and grabbed me…I feel so bad for letting you down.”
Depp reportedly apologized and referred to himself as a “f***ing savage” and a “lunatic” in some of the messages the actress kept. His company, Brown Rudnick, reportedly was unable to locate the texts in the Jeanne du Barry actor’s iCloud or determine whether they had been deleted.
Johnny Depp’s Assistant Claimed Amber Heard Text Messages Were ‘Doctored’
Stephen Deuters earlier reacted to claims that he apologized to the actor’s ex-wife for an alleged incident in which Johnny Depp reportedly kicked Amber Heard. He later claimed that the text messages were “heavily doctored.”
According to Deuters, who spoke to TMZ, he has never claimed that Depp attacked Heard and was unaware of the alleged physical abuse between the two. He also added that he had never seen Depp act violently toward any person he knew.
Furthermore, Deuters told TMZ that he would swear under oath that the alleged text exchange between the two never occurred and that screenshots of it were suspicious because they lacked a date and time stamp.
Well, Depp v Heard, the latest Netflix documentary series that breaks down the six-week trial over three parts, charts the unfavorable online attention and animosity directed at the actress.
