Talking about the tough time the duo had while shooting the movie, Willem Dafoe and his co-star stated that it was indeed a horror experience to shoot the movie. Recalling the horrible conditions, a hilarious tale of spraying a fire hose on his face repeatedly while Robert Eggers repeatedly reset the take to do it all again.

“That’s the closest I’ve come to punching a director. However much I love Robert [Eggers], there was a point where I did five takes walking across the beach, and after a while I was like, “What the fuck is going on? I feel like you’re just spraying a fire hose in my face. I am spraying a fire hose in your face.”

He further continued,

“It was like some kind of torture. It definitely creates an interesting energy. [Laughs] Just out of curiosity, do you think differently about a part when you decide to do a less commercial thing, as opposed to when you’re doing a huge franchise thing? Are the approaches different?”

It was indeed a traumatizing experience for the actor but the final result turned out to be good. The Lighthouse earned an average of 7.4/10 on IMDB with a whopping 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
