What Happened to Emma Watson and Rupert Grint After They Kissed in Chamber of Secrets Still Bothers Harry Potter Fans

The moment that the Harry Potter fans have been waiting for since the beginning of the series finally happened in Deathly Hallows Part II, but what comes next? The pertinent question that has haunted fans of Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) – otherwise also adorably known as Romione by the fandom – after their shared kiss in the final film of the franchise was recently acknowledged by the collective fandom.

Until now, however, a quick albeit uneasy fix had been to ignore the obvious problem in favor of not having to rationalize an unanswerable puzzle which was – how in the world did Ron and Hermione ever escape the Chamber of Secrets after destroying the Horcrux in the Hufflepuff’s cup?

Emma Watson Leaves a Massive Plot Hole Unsolved in Finale

It’s not for the perfectly well-versed and always on-point Emma Watson aka Hermione Granger to find herself in an unsolvable problem. The matter at hand has a lot to do with unresolved feelings and the building of romantic tension between her character and Ron Weasley since the very first film of the series. Adapted from the stories and mythology of British author J.K. Rowling, the Potterheads have always been fascinated by the two, and considering how they have always gravitated toward each other, despite their constant bickering belying an underlying current of love rather than hate, the Romione will-they-won’t-they conundrum garnered a fan following all of its own over the course of the movies.

As such, when the pair does come together in a passionate kiss in Voldemort’s raging war in Deathly Hallows Part II, the internal shriek that was exhaled across the globe numbed the fandom’s processing capabilities for the following few years, especially as the immediate next scene panned over to the building war and the imminent threat of Voldemort breaching his way into the Hogwarts grounds. Amid all the drama and the atmosphere rife with anxious panic, one often overlooks the little problem of Hermione and Ron being stuck in the Chamber of Secrets, unable to get out without any aid.

However, when the war ensues, with another one of Voldemort’s horcruxes destroyed, Ron and Hermione, join the frontlines beside Harry Potter and the rest of Hogwarts to stand up to Voldemort and put an end to his reign of terror.

Harry Potter Fandom Bothered By Ron and Hermione Plothole

If a plot hole could have a simple solution or a rational explanation, one could not care less about it remaining unacknowledged or involved by the director, scriptwriters, and editors. But faults as immense as Ron and Hermione’s inescapable situation in the Chamber of Secrets is unforgivable. In the film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the trio of brave kids destined for greatness enters the Chamber, Harry kills the Basilisk, and the trio escapes from the vault-like chasm with the help of Fawkes, who carries them up on its tail. In the final film, there was no Fawkes to help them escape since he was gone a long time by then.

Despite working on and crafting their career’s magnum opus over the course of these eight films, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe haven’t stopped long enough to question such similar plotholes left behind by their roles. The films, beginning with Philosopher’s Stone and ending with the Deathly Hallows duology have given rise to many more puzzling gaps in the narrative that has left the fandom confused and in need of answers. The novels, on the other hand, tackle the romantic tension of our favorite pair with extraordinary grace, putting meaning, weight, and worth into the moment when Hermione and Ron finally kiss.

Regardless, the Harry Potter films have given us more than enough joy to keep us immersed in its expansive mythology for time immemorial. Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent announcement about rebooting the film franchise with an 8-part series has also been welcome news for the fans. So far, the only update informs us that each season will tackle the content of one book from the original text material. No other update regarding its production has been made yet and Emma Watson along with her two male co-stars has made no indication of returning for cameos in the new show.

The Harry Potter films are available for streaming on MAX.
