Besides the widely popular Iron Man in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. is also celebrated for his work in Sherlock Holmes. Even after having only two movies, the film franchise has a large fan base with a large number of fans still waiting for the third installment. While various reports talked about the uncertainty of the project repeatedly, Susan Downey recently confirmed that the movie series isn’t going to end soon.
It has been more than a decade since we witnessed the Tony Stark fame donning the hat of the 221B Baker Street detective. Soon after Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was released in 2011, it was confirmed that the series won’t halt there. But eventually, it seemed that the threequel moved into some sort of limbo until we recently heard the statements of Susan Downey.
Sherlock Holmes 3 isn’t a dead project yet!
While a large part of Robert Downey Jr.‘s stardom is centered around The Marvel Cinematic Universe, he is also quite popular for his portrayal of Holmes. The first movie in the series was released in 2009 and the Guy Ritchie movie took no time to be a smasher hit. Even the sequel proved to be a commercial success. But troubles arose when the threequel faced several delays until the pandemic after which it eventually went into development limbo.
Sherlock Holmes 3 was first announced after the success of the sequel in 2011. The project was under active development until 2019 when the release date was changed to 2021 and Guy Ritchie was replaced with Dexter Fletcher. But the troubles didn’t end as the movie was hit by the pandemic and delayed indefinitely.
While the fans have been waiting since then for any positive update on the movie, recently the Iron Man actor’s wife and Team Downey producer, Susan Downey confirmed the third part. Recently, during her appearance in the UnWrapped podcast, she and her producing associate confirmed that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still a priority for the production company and Downey Jr. himself.
“Well, here’s what I can tell you. And Amanda can attest to this. Prior to this, we had lunch together with Robert, the three of us. And it was a very specific topic of conversation. So yes, it is in the hopper. We’re going to do it when it’s right, with the right people, but it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.”
Now although the fans will be delighted after this update, an interview by Dexter Fletcher a few days ago hinted at an opposite scenario for the movie.
What did Dexter Fletcher say on Sherlock Holmes 3?
Dexter Fletcher is currently busy promoting his Apple TV+ film Ghosted starring Ana de Armas and Chris Evans. Soon before the comments by Susan Downey hit the internet, Fletcher, during an interview with Cinemablend said that despite having a brilliant script, the movie’s future is quite uncertain. He revealed that he was having active discussions with the Zodiac actor and Jude Law before the pandemic hit and the project was delayed indefinitely. Now, he even claimed to have doubts about Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘apetite’ for the movie. But in the end, he also accepted his desire of returning to the project.
It can’t be denied that the comments by both Fletcher and Susan Downey are quite contradictory but as the reports are confirmed now, we hope to get more updates soon enough. While the details about the release date and team are still less than scarce, this positive update on the movie is sure to excite the fans. On the other hand, it was also confirmed that two HBO spin-off series were also in development and are also waiting for potential updates. It will be intriguing to find out if Robert Downey Jr. and Co. succeed in turning Sherlock Holmes into an MCU-Esque Cinematic Universe.
Both the Sherlock Holmes movies can be streamed on HBO Max.
