Seth Rogen has come a long way from doing stand-up comedy as a teen to portraying characters in movies like Pineapple Express, Freaks and Geeks, This is the End, The Interview, Steve Jobs, and Long Shot.
And now he’s been on fire in the production game, with hits like The Boys and the recently released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Rogen produces film and TV projects, along with his longtime collaborators Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, through a production company, Point Grey Pictures.
You’d expect Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to aim for the big leagues. But even though they’re into comic book stuff like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rogen spilled that he’s a bit hesitant about diving into Marvel and DC projects.
Seth Rogen Has Revealed Why He Doesn’t Want to Work For Marvel or DC
Seth Rogen revealed why he’s not eager to jump into the Marvel or DC universes. Two months back, in an interview with Polygon, he was asked what’s been keeping him “turned off” from diving into other movie franchises (especially with the two comic-based giants).
The star revealed that his doubt about working with Marvel or DC stems from “fear”, as he and Goldberg have a specific working style:
“Honestly, probably fear. [laughs] We really have a pretty specific way we work; me and Evan have been writers for 20 years at this point.”
He continued:
“It’s a fear of the process, honestly. And I say that knowing nothing about the process. There are a lot of Marvel things I love. It’s mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place, which seems like a very good system, and a system that serves them very well. But is it a system that we would ultimately get really frustrated with? And what’s nice about [Mutant Mayhem] is that we’re the producers of this. So we dictated the system, and we dictated the process in a lot of ways. And that’s what’s also appealing for us about The Boys and the other bigger franchise-y type things we’ve done, is that we are creating the infrastructure and process for them, not plugging into someone else’s infrastructure and process. We’re control freaks!”
Seth Rogen really wants to be in charge creatively. In the above statement, he said how they (Rogen and Goldberg) are producers in Mutant Mayhem and The Boys, which means they get to set up how things work to suit their preferences. For him, control over the creative process seems to be a key factor in his career choices.
Seth Rogen Commented That Marvel Movies are Geared Toward Kids
Besides telling his reasons why he doesn’t want to work with the comic-based giants, The Superbad actor also said Marvel movies are for kids. He went on to say in the same interview (Polygon):
“I think that Kevin Feige is a brilliant guy, and I think a lot of the filmmakers he’s hired to make these movies are great filmmakers. But as someone who doesn’t have children… It is [all] kind of geared toward kids, you know?”
So, it’s clear Rogen thinks he doesn’t fit into the well-established systems of Marvel or DC. He also admits that the studios’ films are solely based on a certain target audience (mainly kids), contributing to his doubts about joining these franchises.
However, the actor only fears the process because he knows nothing about it (as he said), and there are many things he loves about Marvel. In addition, he also insisted that The Boys wouldn’t exist without Marvel.
