Loki, the god of mischief, is undoubtedly one of MCU”s most favorite characters, who despite being a villain initially, was able to win over the hearts of the audience. It won’t be wrong to say that Tom Hiddleston has made some major contributions to make the above statement true.
Hiddleston has garnered immense recognition for his portrayal of the mischievous and charismatic Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With his captivating performances, Hiddleston has become an integral part of the MCU, and this seemed to be one of the reasons why makers had to re-write Loki’s death in Thor: The Dark World.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki Was Planned To Get Dead In The Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World, is the second installment in the Thor film series. The film delved deeper into Loki’s internal struggle and explored his complex relationship with Thor. Tom Hiddleston masterfully depicted Loki’s multifaceted nature, seamlessly shifting between vulnerability, deception, and moments of genuine emotion. One of the most impactful moments in Thor: The Dark World was Loki’s death scene. Originally, the film was intended to conclude Loki’s story with his sacrifice to save Thor and the realms. However, the audience’s reaction during test screenings changed the course of events. Viewers refused to believe that Loki had truly met his end so early.
“The audience says, ‘Well obviously we don’t believe that.’ They just didn’t accept that Loki was really dead. They thought he would somehow find some spontaneous trick or way of getting out of it.”
The Makers Of Thor: The Dark World Decided to Extend Loki’s Lifeline
Loki is surely the god of tricks but his trick to fake his own death at the end of Thor: The Dark World was something that the makers came up with themselves at the very end after witnessing the public’s dissatisfaction during the screen testing. The studio revamped the script, allowing Loki to continue his mischievous adventures in subsequent films until meeting his ultimate fate in Avengers: Infinity War.
“It made them all scratch their heads at Marvel Studios and think, ‘Um, right. Ok, we better rethink this.’ And that’s how they came up with the new ending, which is that Loki had faked his own death and had shape-shifted into an Asgardian guard and was now impersonating Odin sitting on the throne. Which then led us into the beginning of Ragnarok where it’s Loki pretending to be Odin, and he’s pretended to be Odin for quite a long time, which is quite the spell to keep up.”
It is tough to imagine MCU going forward without Loki. Even after Loki’s death in Avengers: Infinity War, the makers continued to follow the story of his variant through his independent series. The series may have not been made only if the makers decided to go forward with Loki’s early death. The instance surely reflects Loki’s popularity in the MCU’s fanbase.
