James Gunn’s competence as a filmmaker, if ever been put into doubt, has been resolved with the closing film of his Guardians trilogy. The space-faring epic that began its grand adventure in 2014 somewhere along its 6-film appearance in the past decade made its audience feel like a part of the found family too. Despite the constant hardships and the near-apocalyptic ends faced by the group, the phantom thread that brought and bound them together only ever got stronger with time.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, that bond solidified beyond love and trust. This family of misfits, now spreading their wings out into the galaxy and finding their place in the universe, know they will find their way back to each other, even if it is at the end of the forever and beautiful sky.

James Gunn Makes and Breaks Hearts Across the Galaxy

If anyone could have rounded up the fandom’s heart without warning, sneaking into our existentially critical emotional spectrum and turning the knob a full one-eighty from action-thrill-danger to an experience of a lifetime, it was the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise helmed by James Gunn.

Without prior warning, the director set off a live grenade smack-dab in the middle of an unassuming and building crowd of Marvel fanaticism who, by the end of the last ride, felt exhausted by the emotions that ran rampant in the three chapters of the Guardians saga. As such, losing them from the Marvel body of work felt equivalent to losing a limb, and the fandom is now forever left reeling from the gut punch that screams we are never getting to feel whole again.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 was complete in its glorious fun. It had all the elements of friendship and tragedy, the sacrifices and the comedy, the mishaps and the action, and Drax and Mantis being the best siblings to have ever existed in the MCU. The enemy, in a signature Guardians fashion, became part of the found family of strays after he too was given his existence by a dysfunctional god and later left abandoned by the family he was born into.

The galaxy, despite losing the former and familiar Guardians, felt all the better in the end because of the ones that rose in the aftermath. Even in their farewell, the resurrection of a family reunited in their love for each other leaves the audience with a feeling that just happens to sit right, without having to wrench our hearts out and stomp on it as Endgame did.

James Gunn Publishes His Farewell Statement to MCU

As the era comes to a mournful end, the Guardians’ godfather, James Gunn is expected to make a statement to ease the feeling of overwhelming loss that has shrouded the fandom since the franchise IP’s ending. The director who first saw the glorious, spell-binding potential in this unruly gang of misfits, spoke at the dawn of the premiere via Twitter.

In his transition to DC as the CBM studio’s chief, Gunn is already exceeding expectations as a leader and a creator. In his first foray as a literal god by establishing an entire universe of characters, stories, worlds, and dimensions, the only thing that remains for the writer-director to do is to pay heed to what Kevin Feige had once told him in the warmth of their comforting friendship after learning about The Suicide Squad gig, and that is to go and make one damn good movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is now playing in theatres worldwide.
