HBO Canceled Reboots Of Classic Series

Witnessing radical changes over the years in the corporate structure, HBO purposefully updates and renews its strategies from time to time. However, on a recent note, with all that is going on, the network is witnessing some major setbacks that are affecting them. With legendary shows and classic series coming to an end, there always appears the inevitable question of “what’s next?”

Trying to stack up the network with upcoming shows, HBO inevitably chose spinoffs and reboots. Presenting the world with House of the Dragon following the end of Game Of Thrones, HBO tried to carry forward the legacy of the epic show. Similarly, for several such series, the network previously chose to come up with spinoffs. However, following the writers’ strike, HBO evidently took the decision to axe certain reboots and spinoffs.

Although for decades, HBO has been known for its long-lasting relationship with creators, the network finally decided to come up with completely original stories. Collectively agreeing on the decision of suspending reboots of classic series like The Wire, Sopranos, and such, the network chose to pursue original stories. Even for Succession, Drama Chief Francesca Orsi stated, “I know there was some talk about spinoffs, but no, not at all”.

HBO Is Seeking Original Stories

In an attempt to regain the golden reputation of the network, HBO has been canceling all reboots and spinoffs of their shows. Despite close attachment with several characters from different shows, Francesca Orsi clearly stated, “There is no intention of spinning any one character off”. Discussing Succession, which recently ended with its 90 minutes finale, Orsi stated,

Jesse, should he do a series again, I think it will be entirely original…it will be a new show, a new idea entirely.”

Calling the writers and directors “original thinker”, Orsi subtly clarified the idea of not getting involved in any further reboots and spinoffs. “We’d rather find something totally original, new, and un-derivative in terms of its world,” the Drama Chief stated. Currently pursuing the Game Of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, Orsi mentioned how desperately the network is trying to finish off the show to start afresh with new stories altogether. “We are mindful of rolling into Season 3 more quickly after Season 2,” Orsi stated.

Francesca Orsi clapped back at Disney

Following the end of HBO’s partnership with Disney in March 2023, Francesca Orsi clapped back at the entertainment conglomerate stating, HBO won’t ever work just for the sake of revenue. Orsi claimed HBO’s decision to cancel spin-offs and reboots came solely from a creative perspective. Thus, they canceled the scheduling plan of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Night, a spinoff about the status of Jon Snow.

Recalling the “fortuitous” years back in 2003, when HBO kicked off with its first four original scripted series Oz, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and The Wire, Francesca Orsi and the entire team is working towards that goal once more.
