Warner Bros.-owned DCEU franchise just can’t catch a break when it comes to bombing at the box office. Their latest attempt, Blue Beetle, has also failed to challenge the MCU franchise effectively, grossing just over $100 million at the box office so far.
Things usually start to look much better when one looks at the bigger picture. In this case, Warner Bros. can at least feel better for not committing to a huge budget to make Blue Beetle happen, as more than a decade ago, they saw Green Lantern make history by becoming one of the biggest box-office disasters. Against a production budget of $200 million, the Ryan Reynolds starrer superhero movie could only gross $220 million.
Reynolds, who is all set to feature under the MCU umbrella with his movie Deadpool 3, has never shied away from making jokes about the 2011 flop, and in 2018 he took the banter concerning the same to the next level.
What Warner Bros. Tweeted About Green Lantern Star Ryan Reynolds
As fans, we often get emotionally attached to certain movies or characters just based on witnessing their experiences and exploits within a two-hour-long film. Now put yourself in the shoes of these stars and imagine after spending months during production just how attached they may get to their co-stars, the set, or certain props.
The inability to let go of these memories often leads to our favorite stars picking something from their respective sets as memorabilia. Robert Downey Jr, Gabrielle Union, Tom Sturridge, and Ryan Reynolds, among others, have all reportedly taken turns in different situations and manners to take something from their place of work.
Reynolds, who starred in Green Lantern with his now wife Blake Lively (Carol Ferris), also stole a ring from the movie’s set. In 2018, the studio tweeted to jokingly demand the ring back. Warner Bros’s tweet read: “Sorry @VancityReynolds, we’re going to need the ring back.”
To be fair to the studio, the Green Lantern ring is a big deal in the movie and ideally should remain with the makers. It grants the wearer incredible powers. That’s exactly what happens to Reynolds’ character Hal Jordan, a test pilot, who ends up with superhuman abilities after being chosen by the Ring.
How Ryan Reynolds Reacted After Warner Bros. Publicly Called Him Out for Stealing
Reynolds, who has made his Deadpool character Wade Wilson stand out from the rest of superheroes mainly because of his humorous nature, is equally funny off camera.
The 46-year-old can be frequently seen bantering with his wife on social media. Accordingly, when Warner Bros. tried to have some fun at his expense on Twitter (now X), he came back with an even more amusing response.
Reynolds replied, “Well if we’d used a NuvaRing™️ in the first place, we wouldn’t be in this mess. #Deadpool2.” In case you are confused, he was referring to a female contraceptive, and most likely suggesting that Green Lantern should’ve never been made.
The fact he mentioned the Deadpool 2 movie, which was released in the same year, made the reply all the sharper.
