Hollywood is currently suffering major wreckage due to the WGA organizing writers’ strikes. Evidently, the current turn of events took place after 15 years, since the first WGA strike almost wrecked Hollywood. During the previous writers’ strike in 2007-08, several big-budget projects and franchises like that of Daniel Craig’s James Bond movies suffered terribly.
As the writers’ strike charged the entertainment industry for 14 weeks over unfair royalty practices, during 2007-08, movie studios went into meltdown, not knowing how to handle the situation. Thereafter, several half-finished films were rushed into production, like Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace, praying nobody would notice those mishaps.
Effects Of Writers’ Strike On Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace
Just like Hollywood is currently suffering due to the ongoing non-negotiable WGA SAG-AFTRA strike, the entertainment industry previously faced a similar meltdown during the first writers’ strike in 2007-08. The entertainment industry almost went into a complete shutdown with movie studios failing to handle the situation.
The first writers’ strike which went on for 14 weeks, affected several big-budget projects and franchises just as Daniel Craig‘s Quantum of Solace (2008). Following the benchmark created by the predecessors of the James Bond franchise, Craig’s 2006 Casino Royale became a major hit, launching the actor as Britain’s coolest secret agent.
However, fans were simply disappointed by Marc Forster’s Bond follow-up Quantum Of Solace (2008). Thus, audiences brutally criticized the movie as a $590M disaster in the reputed franchise. Evidently, the entire issue simply originated due to the WGA strike, which left the director and his crew unable to rewrite scenes that were almost necessary.
Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace Turned Into A Disappointment
Facing a grave situation during the 2007-08 WGA strike, Daniel Craig took up the responsibility to make the necessary changes in the script. Temporarily shifting his role from being a legendary actor to a scriptwriter, Craig tried helping Marc Forster and his crew with the $590M movie.
“I wrote the script myself,” the actor revealed. During a 2012 interview, Daniel Craig admitted how the original Paul Haggis’ screenplay arrived just two hours before the outbreak of the writers’ strike. Thus, the situation forced Craig to lift the pen for the sake of his own franchise.
“We were f***ed. We had a bare bones of a script and then there was a writers’ strike and there was nothing we could do. There was me trying to rewrite scenes, and a writer I am not.” Daniel Craig shared.
Although Daniel Craig tried his best to help the director and not rush their half-finished film into production, his attempt ended up being a disaster in 007 history. Later, Marc Forster admitted how he wanted to run away from the project and considered quitting due to the ongoing issue and time constraint imposed on Quantum Of Solace.
