After being announced back in 2020 that Taika Waititi is set to direct a Star Wars project, there hasn’t been any substantial update on this for a long while, and the future of the Waititi-led Star Wars movie was wearing off. However, after the announcement of three other Star Wars projects being developed for the big screen, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy finally gave an insight into the state of Waititi’s project.
Even though Waititi’s project wasn’t announced alongside the projects from James Mangold, Dave Filoni, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Kennedy confirmed that Taika Waititi’s project is completely safe and is still in active development.
Taika Waititi has been given full creative control over his Star Wars project
Even though the director’s last major project, Thor: Love and Thunder, wasn’t the biggest success and was heavily criticized for its over-dependency on Taika Waititi’s cringe humor. Kennedy expressed that they have full faith in the vision of the Jojo Rabbit director and are allowing him full freedom to craft a great Star Wars movie. She said,
“Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.”
Even though it seems that the Aussie director is getting full creative control over the project, things haven’t quite worked out well at the present, as Kennedy explained that the project is running slow.
The new Star Wars project hasn’t quite picked up the pace yet
Although Taika Waititi has reportedly been given full creative control to craft his Star Wars story and is reportedly working on the script, the Lucasfilm president expressed that he hasn’t quite picked up the pace yet and is currently pretty busy with his other projects. She explained the situation by stating,
“He is working away. He is just a little slow, but he’s working away. And he’s very busy.”
But even though it might be a long while before we get to witness Waititi’s take on the popular IP, it isn’t the only Star Wars project that has fans excited. Among all the other three projects that have been announced, James Mangold’s project has created the most buzz. And it seems that after the failure of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Disney is set to bring the franchise back to its glory.
