"We really blew things up": MCU Writer Was Concerned After Tom Holland's Spider-Man Suffered the Same Fate as Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man

While Tom Holland initially appeared as fans’ favorite wall-crawling superhero, Spider-Man, in the 2016 MCU movie, Captain America: Civil War, he later reprised his role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And while Holland lived a thug life, defending New York City as a newly minted superhero, fans believed there was a moment that appeared similar to Iron Man.

Apparently, it wasn’t just the fans who felt the inevitable moment of similarity between Spider-Man and Iron Man, even the MCU writers were concerned about the same. One of Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s writers confirmed how they unknowingly added an “I am Iron Man” moment for Tom Holland.

Fans Pointed Out Tom Holland’s Iron Man Moment 

When Tom Holland was cast as Spider-Man,  Stan Lee revealed how the actor was the perfect embodiment of the character as he was of the “exact age and height”. Further, even fans connected with Holland’s version of Spider-Man more than the predecessors following his debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

Gradually as Holland’s Spider-Man movies navigated into the second and third installment in the trilogy, fans noticed a transition in the MCU character, despite being done seamlessly. In Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans were stunned by the scene where Spider-Man’s identity was revealed amid the city-saving shenanigans.

Finding a strange connection between Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man character and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, fans came up with bizarre theories of how the MCU offered the web-slinger with his “I am Iron Man” moment. Evidently, even the MCU writers confirmed the fan theories and recalled the scene. Further, they even expressed their concerns and explained the minor details.

MCU Writers Confirmed And Explained The Scene 

Following the Spider-Man: No Way Home – The Art of the Movie book release, writer Chris McKenna confirmed how MCU offered Tom Holland his “I am Iron Man” moment, with Mysterio’s scene revealing, “Spider-Man’s name is Peter Parker”. However, McKenna also explained how, unlike Iron Man, Spider-Man had no control over his vulnerable moments.

Peter had his ‘I am Iron Man’ moment, but he didn’t get to make it, unlike Tony… [It] was forced on him from the grave.” Chris McKenna shared. 

The Spider-Man: No Way Home writer further mentioned the concerns they had surrounding Holland’s Iron Man moment. “When we ended the last movie, we were like, Wow, we really blew things up–how are the next writers gonna get out of that jam?’” McKenna recalled. Scared of the fact that Spider-Man might suffer the same fate as Iron Man, Kevin Feige mentioned brainstorming ideas to find a way out.

We didn’t want to shy away from the fact that his identity is now revealed… And with writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, director Jon Watts, and Producer Amy Pascal, we sat and just started brainstorming.” Kevin Feige recalled. 

Thereafter, the crew began working on the script and offered breaking points to Ned and MJ, while showcasing Peter Parker’s vulnerable side, unlike Tony Stark. Eventually, despite the bizarre and iconic  “I am Iron Man” moment, Marvel Studios executed the clean journey for Spider-Man.
