Apart from being one of the greatest filmmakers in Hollywood, James Cameron, and Guillermo del Toro also share a wholesome bond and have been close friends since the 90s. But before Del Toro cemented his name in the top realms of Hollywood, he almost quit Hollywood following his experience with Miramax’s Harvey Weinstein, now known as a convicted s*x offender.
Following the harsh treatment that Del Toro had to endure during his initial phase in Hollywood, his close friend James Cameron would later go on to defend Del Toro and call out Weinstein.
Guillermo del Toro commends James Cameron for stepping up against Harvey Weinstein
Following his mistreatment at the helms of Miramax during his initial days in the industry, Guillermo del Toro commended James Cameron for standing up against Weinstein back in the 90s.
Following the 1988’s Oscars, when James Cameron took the world by storm with his Iconic Titanic and garnered 11 Oscars, the Avatar director almost smacked Weinstein with his Oscar statuette. After Cameron won the Oscar for Best Editing, he was then approached by Weinstein to work for him. The Avatar director then didn’t flinch before calling Weinstein out for his treatment of Del Toro and almost went into a fistfight with the convicted s*x offender. Cameron stated,
“And so I’m on my way back to my seat with my editing Oscar, and this guy’s jumping up to introduce himself, saying, ‘If you want to come to work at a place that’s a friend of the artist, a friend of the filmmaker’, he’s holding his hand out, and I just blew him off. It was just an ugly little moment. But, yeah, I did defend Guillermo, and I called Harvey on his bulls***”
Alongside Del Toro, actress Mira Sorvino, who starred in Del Toro’s first American commercial film, Mimic, also praised Cameron for his brave stance against one of the biggest predators in Hollywood.
Guillermo del Toro almost left Hollywood
Before making it big in the realms of Hollywood and cementing his name as one of the biggest filmmakers of our time, Guillermo del Toro almost considered quitting Hollywood. The director recalled that working for Weinstein for his first American movie, Mimic was one of the worst periods of his time. He said,
“I hated the experience. My first American experience was almost my last because it was with the Weinsteins and Miramax. I have got to tell you, two horrible things happened in the late 90s, my father was kidnapped, and I worked with the Weinsteins. I know which one was worse … the kidnapping made more sense, I knew what they wanted.”
The director was also allegedly fired from the movie, but the lead actress, Mira Sorvino went on to revolt against this decision. However, after the film’s success, Weinstein came forward to take all the credit, which was another reason why Cameron called out him during the Oscars.
