How was the off-screen relationship between Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny?

The Chris Carter show had a huge impact on the world of pop culture. The original show which ran for 11 seasons and 218 episodes sparked a franchise of its own with spin-offs, movies, and comic books. Interestingly, the on-screen chemistry between the leads which was a major positive aspect of the series was never affected by the off-screen drama that occurred between the two.

In an interview with The Guardian, Gillian Anderson stated her thoughts on the media rumors that the two hated each other. The Sex Education actress though corroborated the report, also contradicted it to some extent.

“I mean, yes, there were definitely periods when we hated each other. Hate is too strong a word. We didn’t talk for long periods of time. It was intense, and we were both pains in the a*se for the other at various times.”

It can be understood that even after having a problematic past, Gillian Anderson also respects her co-star Duchovny. The 54-year-old actress’ statement was also validated by David Duchovny who stated.

“We used to argue about nothing. We couldn’t stand the sight of each other.”

But similar to Gillian Anderson, Duchovny also showed a very respectful side of himself. Both of them agreed to the fact that they didn’t let the toxicity linger for long in their friendship and their bond developed over time.

While it may seem from the first glance into the interviews that The X-Files stars have nothing for each other but hate, the reality is the opposite. Both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny who rose to fame together have also often been seen speaking highly about each other. The former added in her interview with The Guardian that their bond was closer more than ever.

Meanwhile, David Duchovny also said in his statement to Metro that the hatred fades away with time and all that remains is love and appreciation.

“All that fades away and you’re just left with the appreciation and love for the people you’ve worked with for so long.”

It also explains why the fans adore them so much. Additionally, it also speaks on the maturity of both the stars who didn’t have anything like the other major celebrity feuds. Gillian Anderson has also said to Deadline how she and the Golden Globe winner didn’t take any time to understand an instant spark between themselves. This spark also led to the fans constantly shipping the stars on the internet which Duchovny felt was very odd.

The X-Files can be streamed on Hulu.
