HBO’s epic series Game of Thrones has gained immense popularity since the release of the first season. Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s celebrated novels A Song of Ice and Fire and A Game of Thrones; the David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created show extended to 8 Seasons.
Despite the nature of the grandness and epic narrative, many actors have rejected roles in the series. Of course, the series featured an astounding number of actors including, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, and many others in major roles. But many have declined to be in the series including X-Files star Gillian Anderson.
The Real Reason Why Gillian Anderson Rejected Game of Thrones Role
Gillian Anderson has appeared in the celebrated sci-fi show The X-Files as Dr. Dana Scully. The actor also appeared in several hit shows such as The Crown, Hannibal, and The Fall. However, the 54-year-old has rejected a role in HBO’s superhit epic drama Game of Thrones. In an interview with Stylist, The Pale Blue Eye actor revealed the real reason behind declining the role in the famous show saying that it was due to family commitments.
“Yes, but also because I don’t like the roles very much. Not that they’re not good! Whether it’s Game Of Thrones or Downton Abbey, my 18-year-old [daughter Piper Maru] cannot believe I’ve turned down things she loves. But with a four and six-year-old [sons Felix and Oscar], I can’t justify spending that kind of time away from home, unless I’m working with Scorsese.”
However, it is unknown which role she was offered in the show. But evidently, Anderson also rejected the British historical drama series, Downton Abbey but she is far from regretting it. However, her daughter Piper Maru found it hard to believe that her mother rejected roles in shows she loved most. But if it was a call from Martin Scorsese, the actor said, she would manage time to be featured in his projects.
Gillian Anderson’s Sources of Happiness
Anderson has been a brilliant actor but she has endured a lot as the actor revealed that she had a tendency towards self-destruction in the past. Now, the actor has maintained a balanced life with yoga, meditation, and reading books.
“I do yoga and meditation, that helps. Also, I read things in an attempt to ground myself and remind me to stay in the here and now, rather than jump too much into the future of planning and organising the chaos of life. I try not to spend too much time on screens, which is a challenge today,” Anderson told Stylist.
The actor has found happiness and positivity in life from her work and her children. “I enjoy the work I do and I’m very grateful because I like being on a set,” she said of the time being on set. It is rewarding for the actor and she hoped to continue working as much as possible.
“I like being part of a production and the creative process. I get a lot of enjoyment and reward from that. But I’m happiest when I’m surrounded by my kids, whether that’s in a house or a park or whatever, and there’s laughter. That brings me the most joy.”
The Sex Education actor recently joined Kurt Sutter-created Netflix Western series The Abandons. The details of the premiere of the show are still under wraps.
