The Sony Spider-Man Universe is expanding and this might mean that the current Spider-Man we know and love – Tom Holland – could be ending his term as the friendly neighborhood superhero. The upcoming project, Madame Web is going to be an important entry into the SSU and although not much is known about the secretive project, actress Sydney Sweeney is all set to be a part of the film.

There are no official confirmations about the character she is going to play in the upcoming film. However, if the reports are to be believed, Sydney Sweeney will take on the challenge of Julia Carpenter, only the second to be Spider-Woman. If this is true, then Tom Holland needs to watch his back as Sydney Sweeney might be coming to take over the Sony Spider-Man world.

Sydney Sweeney has time and again proved that she is an asset to the entertainment industry with roles in projects like Euphoria, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The White Lotus. According to Deadline, Sweeney has “quickly jumped to the top of every major studio list for young rising stars” and rightly so. The question is, which character is Sweeney going to play in Madame Web since Dakota Johnson will be playing the lead in the movie?

A reliable insider, Jeff Sneider, revealed during an episode of The Hot Mic that Sweeney will be playing Julia Carpenter, an iteration of Spider-Woman, in Madame Web. He stated,

“I’m told  – there has been a lot of speculation as to what Sydney Sweeney’s role is going to be in the Marvel Universe. I am told that she is as rumoured, I guess, playing Spider-Woman. Now there are a couple of different Spider-Woman, [Sweeney] was rumoured to play the second one.”

As of now, nothing of her character has been mentioned beyond the usual speculations and reports. However, if Sweeney really is going to be taking on the mantle of Julia Carpenter, it might be a new era of Sony Spider-Man Universe. Instead of the confusion that comes with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man having one foot in Sony and the other in MCU, Sony might just go with Sweeney’s character in the long run.

A Quick Glance into Madame Web

The upcoming film is going to be set in the same universe as Morbius and Venom films. Johnson will be playing the titular character and the film is going to be directed by S.J. Clarkson who was previously responsible for shows like Jessica Jones. Apart from Sweeney and Johnson, a few other cast names have come up including, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Zosia Mamet, and Isabela Merced. Neither of these actors’ characters has been revealed.

However, Roberts did give her fans a bit of a hint when it comes to her character stating that she is not going to have any kind of superpowers in the film. She stated,

“What I can tell you is I’m not a superhero. Some people may think she’s a superhero but not…like I don’t have supernatural powers. So I can tell you that.”

Hmm. We wonder who she is playing. Since the film has only completed its filming very recently, it’s safe to say that our questions aren’t going to be answered anytime soon and a trailer shouldn’t be expected to come out in the near future either. However, we are not going to lie, the high levels of secrecy are just increasing our excitement!

Madame Web is set to release on February 16, 2024.
