According to reports, Ubisoft may well have killed off a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising. Nothing much has been heard from the franchise for a few months now, ever since reliable and respected insider Jeff Grubb said he’d heard Ubisoft planned to make the game into a franchise, and the sequel had started development. Unfortunately for fans of the first game, it looks like that sequel may never come.
Ubisoft Decide Against Moving Forward with Another Franchise
Ubisoft have had a torrid few years, with game cancellations, delays, the ridiculous and controversial decision recently to delete inactive accounts and the libraries associated to them, and more besides. Having released just two games last calendar year, this year is a big one, and with releases of Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on the horizon, they need as much to go smoothly as they can.
Ubisoft certainly seem to be prioritising their more prominent and well known brands, perhaps to minimise any potential risk to projects and ensure maximum profit after a couple of harder years. With leaks suggesting that no less than eleven Assassin’s Creed titles are in development, some of which are from the ground remakes, others sequels and others still smaller, more grounded projects like Assassin’s Creed Mirage. They’re also still developing Skull and Bones, a title in development for six years at this point, and one that was recently delayed yet again, costing yet more money.
It comes as no surprise then, that with all these delays and other projects, Ubisoft have decided to shift focus away from one of their newer IPs. Fans of the first game will no doubt be sad, as it received generally above average reviews from critics, but fans around the world seemed to enjoy it, as shown by the reaction on Twitter to the news.
Originally it was thought that potential sequels would be set in various different mythologies, for example Roman Gods, Hawaiian Polynesian myths and more. The design choices for the sequel were wide and varied, but unfortunately it looks like instead of that, we’ll be getting nothing at all, and made to enjoy just the first game. That is, unless Ubisoft decide to delete our accounts of course.
