After Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell is reportedly set to join the cast of the sequel to the 1996 action-adventure film Twister. The sequel has been in development since 2020 after news broke out that Universal Pictures is looking for a director to reboot the classic 1996 film. Initial rumors suggested that the Top Gun 2 director Joseph Kosinski was expected to take the director’s seat for the sequel.
However, the project was reportedly green-lit after Steven Spielberg approved Mark L. Smith’s script, and the sequel is titled Twisters. Followed by the earlier reports of the Normal People star joining the cast of the sequel, insider Jeff Sneider has revealed that the Top Gun: Maverick star could be the male lead in the Twister sequel.
Glen Powell Reportedly in Talks to Join Twisters Cast
The 1996 film followed couple Jo Harding and Bill Harding, portrayed by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, respectively. The film was directed by Jan De Bont and received two nominations at the 69th Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. The sequel to the 1996 film is currently under development and Glen Powell is reportedly in talks to join Daisy Edgar-Jones in it.
During the recent session in The Hot Topic podcast, insider Jeff Sneider talked about three potential actors that are in talks for the male lead role in the Twister sequel. As he mentioned that Daisy Edgar-Jones has landed the female lead in the sequel, Sneider said, “I keep hearing Glen Powell from Top Gun: Maverick is going to be the male lead in that.”
He further said that the tipster who gave him the information claimed that the Devotion star was “heading to Oklahoma to destroy a town,” where the first movie was filmed. Jeff Sneider further mentioned that apart from Powell, Miles Teller, and Austin Butler were on the list.
However, the Elvis star is already busy with his upcoming projects. As for Miles Teller, Sneider claimed that he finds Teller’s Top Gun co-star “perfect” for the role. Not many details about the plot of the film are available yet, but the sources suggested that the studio was planning to bring Helen Hunt back in the sequel.
Helen Hunt Pitched a Plot For the Twister Sequel
Helen Hunt starred in the lead role in the film, which grossed $495 million worldwide and became the second-highest-grossing film of the year. During an interview with Collider, the 59-year-old actress shared that the studio rejected her idea.
She shared that the sequel would have killed her character in an opening scene as Jo Harding would be “elder” and “tired.” Hunt shared that the studio rejected her offer. Later reports revealed that the sequel would follow Hardings’ daughter, who ends up following the same path as her parents and become a storm chaser.
Sources also revealed that the studio hopes to bring Helen Hunt back as Jo Harding, but nothing has been confirmed yet. The studio has announced the release date for the sequel.
Twisters is expected to release on July 19, 2023.
