The Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick decimated box-office records. It grossed upwards of a billion dollars during a time when the pandemic was still raging and producers were pulling their movies to put them on streaming services. Along with the stupendous profits, the movie has now also added another feather to its cap. It has been nominated in the Best Picture category at the 2023 Academy Awards. But these laurels didn’t stop Judd Apatow from tearing Tom Cruise apart regarding his Scientology beliefs in front of a packed audience.
Judd Apatow Rips Apart Tom Cruise For Scientology Ideology
Judd Apatow, the host of the DGA Awards, said a lot of shocking things about Tom Cruise during the ceremony. He especially doubled down on the star’s association with the Church of Scientology. Apatow said that Cruise’s stunts feel like an advertisement for Scientology. As per Apatow:
“Every time he does one of these new stunts it does feel like an ad for Scientology, it really does. I mean, is that in Dianetics because there’s nothing about jumping off a cliff in the Torah?”
The host further said that there are only two things the actor seems to be afraid of. According to Apatow:
“The only thing he seems to be afraid of is co-parenting and antidepressants. Do you think if Tom Cruise took antidepressants he’d be like, ‘I’m not jumping off of a fucking motorcycle on a cliff? Why do I even work, I’m rich.'”
The host’s words drew gasps from the crowd, but that didn’t stop him from going even further.
Judd Apatow Roasts Tom Cruise’s Height
At the awards show, Apatow joked about Cruise’s height, saying that he couldn’t see the bunch of phone books the actor was standing on in Top Gun: Maverick. The host said:
“The visual effects in (Top Gun:) Maverick were so top-notch I couldn’t even see the stack of phone books Tom Cruise sat on to reach the flight controls. That’s why he’s always jumping out of tall buildings because you can’t tell how short he is from a 100-story building. That’s why when he’s standing on a wing of an airplane he’s always alone, he doesn’t want anyone there next to him for scale.”
Apatow, who hosted the awards function for the fourth time, said that the action star wasn’t fine and requested that someone should explain to him what CGI is. He joked:
“Tom is not fine, something is wrong right now. Someone needs to explain something to him called CGI — you don’t need to do the stunts, they look exactly the same when you do them on the green screen. You’re 60, calm down.”
Tom Cruise wasn’t present at the DGA awards ceremony but the producer and director of Top Gun: Maverick, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Joseph Kosinski were.
