Tom Hardy Almost Did Not Do The Dark Knight Rises
The character of Bane became synonymous with Tom Hardy’s hulking masked presence in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Interestingly, Hardy almost did not land the marquee role due to a prior commitment. The actor who was getting ready to head to Australia to spend a year shooting Mad Max: Fury Road, was suddenly derailed due to major flooding in the Australian desert that resulted in the sets being destroyed and the shoot ultimately being cancelled.
While the Venom star was devastated by the setback, he was presented a silver lining through Christopher Nolan who contacted him to play the role of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Recalling Nolan’s conversation regarding the character including being in a mask for the entirety of the film, Hardy said,
“How do I feel about wearing a mask? I’d wear a plastic bag over my head for Chris! I’ll do anything for him. I did not see that coming. I never, ever thought I’d be in Batman.”
Bane went on to become one of the iconic villains in the Batman narratives and cemented Tom Hardy’s place in the Hollywood big leagues.
