While actors tend to do some extreme things when it comes to action in movies, the one actor who has been known to above and beyond like no other when it comes to stunts and his roles is Tom Cruise. The actor has starred in the Mission: Impossible series, which has had some of the most bizarre action sequences, all of which are performed by Cruise who refuses to use a stunt double.
While Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation left fans stunned by the fact that Cruise hung off the side of an airplane with nothing but a harness, the latest movie in the franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, might have just topped that with what they just revealed.
Mission: Impossible 7 Built An Actual Train Only To Crash It
Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One revealed that for this movie, the stunts have gone above and beyond in order to fit a vision they have had for many years, to have an intricated and difficult fight sequence on a moving train and then crashing it in real life. This came to life in this movie but the process was not as easy as one might think.
“When we started talking about this movie in terms of a sense of adventure, an action sequence on a train was something we had always wanted to do. We wanted to build upon the previous films and apply all of the knowledge to something practical and real and bring this train sequence to another level. There was not a surplus of trains available to be wreaked. We had to build the train if we wanted to destroy it.” He said.
A problem that they faced was the fact that they were unable to acquire a train that they would completely wreck. So instead, they decided to make their own train and total that. This was not an easy process for obvious reasons, but one of the biggest ones was to make something practical, realistic, and something that could be set on a real railroad track.
Tom Cruise Had To Fight On Top Of A Moving Train For Mission: Impossible 7
For Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Christopher McQuarrie also wanted to do something that was never been done before, as well as top all the previous movies. The filming team had only one shot at getting the perfect take of the train crashing so many cameras were set up at many different angles to capture the perfect shot of the scene.
“To shoot it practically was extremely challenging. No just to execute, but also to design all the different train cars that could actually function on a railroad track. No one else in the world is doing this level of practical film making and it may never be done again.” He added, “Crashing the train involved multiplying factors of difficulty. Every single camera bed had exactly one shot at getting it right”
The destruction of the train wasn’t the only dramatic and dangerous aspect of this sequence as Tom Cruise had to actually fight a character on top of a moving train that was rushing at a speed of 60 miles per hour with a valley in the background. Esai Morales, who is also part of this movie, mentioned that he has done fight scenes before but never something like this but this is how Cruise likes to work. Hayley Atwell, who is hung off the side of this train at some point, revealed when she was filming that scene, Crusie was the perfect person to have there to hold you as not only is the actor fearless in her eyes, but he is also constantly looking to entertain his audience.
