Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One had a strong start before colliding with the Barbenheimer train.
The recently released spy action film encountered some difficulties despite being one of the most eagerly anticipated movies by the Hollywood action star. It appears that Ethan Hunt’s run at the box office took a hit because Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, came out only a few days after Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7.
According to reports, Cruise was not particularly pleased with the Oppenheimer release even though it attracted the most IMAX theaters. Even Christopher Nolan responded to the box office war by stating that there is no denying the fact that movies exist to make money.
Nevertheless, the most recent installment in the action film series, directed by Christopher McQuarrie and titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, has received a resoundingly enthusiastic response from ardent fans.
Tom Cruise Starrer Suffered Because Of The Barbenheimer Wave
Tom Cruise is one of the most successful and well-paid actors. He has an unrivaled marketing plan for each of his movies and goes above and beyond to promote them, which is one of the appealing aspects that has drawn in his fans.
The actor is attracting media interest with the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, the seventh installment in the popular Mission: Impossible series.
In the 1996 Mission: Impossible movie, the actor made his character debut as Ethan Hunt, an IMF agent, and has returned for subsequent sequels. The action-packed film series’ star-studded cast has made millions of dollars at the box office with each installment.
However, his recently released much-anticipated blockbuster saw a drop during its second weekend, making it the lowest-performing sequel. Thus, this latest film’s box office performance has experienced the worst decline in the entire franchise.
Mission Impossible 7′s release was timed to coincide with the biggest box office entries ever, which was the film’s biggest problem. Also, its inability to screen in IMAX theaters after just one week was also a hindrance.
What Caused Decline in Mission Impossible 7 Performance?
Even though it is common for the most recent big-screen blockbuster to see a decline in its second weekend of sales (especially during the busy summer months), Paramount probably would have preferred this Mission Impossible dip to be less pronounced.
The MI studio likely hoped Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One would capitalize on the Top Gun momentum after the enormous success of Tom Cruise’s last movie, Top Gun: Maverick, despite its release in the extremely competitive theater market.
There are a number of factors at play that are probably to blame for the movie’s revenue decline of more than 50%. Well, arguably the most important factor is that Mission Impossible 7 was only shown for one week in theaters with premium formats like IMAX. As a result, the franchise’s earning potential was immediately constrained.
According to an agreement between Christopher Nolan and Universal, the nuclear era biopic, Oppenheimer would run for three weeks on all IMAX screens in North America.
Cruise, the star of Mission Impossible, is said to have been “pretty p*ssed” about this. His film was moved to smaller screens, which limited its ability to earn more money per screen than the more expensive IMAX showings.
For the unversed, along with Cruise, the cast of Mission: Impossible 7 includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Henry Czerny.
Mission Impossible 7 is currently showing in theaters. Its direct sequel is scheduled for release on June 28, 2024.
