The art of making a smashing blockbuster film is always been about beating others at the box office, something that is never really thought about when a movie gains traction through the audience’s admiration of the project. And for a long time, Tom Cruise has been at the forefront of blockbusters with his Mission: Impossible franchise.

Consistently knocking any competition out of the water with some of the most pulse-pounding action films of all time, the release of the seventh installment was expected to have an even greater impact than the previous projects in the franchise. But that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore, as the most recent movie by the star seems to be left in the dust by these films.

The general consensus of what makes a great movie is the box office numbers that it manages to rake in during its run in cinemas around the globe. And for years, every time Tom Cruise came in with a new Mission: Impossible film, everyone in the industry and beyond knew the commercial success that it was going to receive. But with his most recent film Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One, it seems like the script has been flipped in the disfavor of the star.

With the recent release of many much-awaited and hyped films of the year happening in quick succession, there are competitors coming for the Top Gun star’s film, and two of the biggest threats to its box office numbers are Margot Robbie‘s comedy-drama film Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s modern-day masterpiece Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy. These films, which had just been released, are eclipsing the traction that the seventh installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise was starting to receive.

While Barbie was a much-awaited film ever since the time it was starting to be rumored to the day it was announced and opened with the biggest opening day of 2023 with a staggering $70.5 Million, Oppenheimer had been making the rounds purely because of Nolan’s reputation as bringing some of the most exquisite forms of storytelling on-screen, which made these films’ release such a huge deal for the audience as the latter opened with a $33 Million figure.

While the aforementioned reasons were definitely a major part of why these films are becoming the face of cinema people should invest their time in, at the moment, the reason why Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part One has been on the path to becoming a not-so-grand affair is the lack of any major hype around the film. One of the other reasons that many are pointing to is related to the fact that although there are new elements in every single film, the franchise has become somewhat predictable and repetitious.
