2022 was certainly a great year for the action star Tom Cruise, who broke box office records with the sequel to the 1986 action drama Top Gun: Maverick. The sequel to the film had been under development for decades, and cast members of the movie, including Cruise and Val Kilmer, both of them, have been interested in reprising their roles. The sequel was a huge success, making over $1 billion at the box office, along with several nominations at the 95th Academy Awards.
And followed by the massive success of Top Gun 2, it is claimed that the Mission Impossible star is planning the same for his 1990 feature in an effort to redeem its failure at the time of its release.
Tom Cruise Allegedly Planning the Days of Thunder Sequel
Followed by the box office success of the 1986 action drama, Tom Cruise and Tony Scott reunited for the 1990 sports drama Days of Thunder. Starring alongside Nicole Kidman, who would later marry and divorce the action star, the film follows a budding racer facing several complications after he meets an accident.
The Top Gun actor and director’s reunion was expected to make the same impact at the box office. But it failed in doing so and was also criticized for its similarities with the 1986 film. However, recent reports have after the Top Gun sequel, Cruise and Joseph Kosinski are now planning a sequel for Days of Thunder as well.
According to Giant Freaking Robot, the duo is planning and is allegedly developing a sequel to the 1990 movie. It is also claimed that Paramount has been planning streaming series for the Mission Impossible franchise and Days of Thunder.
However, the action star is not in favor of a Days of Thunder series, leading to the speculation that he might have his own plans for the movie’s future. It is also unclear if the original cast of the 1990 movie, including Cruise’s ex-wife, would reprise their respective roles or not.
Tom Cruise Denied Streaming Series Based on His Work
Tom Cruise is known for doing and getting what he wants, whether it’s extreme or death-defying stunts or anything regarding his projects. And he did the same when it came to his most recent movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount was looking forward to developing a Days of Thunder series along with a Mission Impossible spin-off for its streaming series Paramount+. However, both ideas failed to get a green flag from the actor., to develop streaming series based on his movies. Dead Reckoning Part One was released earlier this week and is doing pretty well at the box office, grossing $40 million domestically and $82 million at the global box office.
