There is no secret that Tom Cruise performs his stunts. From bone-chilling stunts on the tallest building in the world to a death-defying drop from over 25,000 feet, there is no limit to what the Mission: Impossible star would do.
Tom Cruise truly keeps setting the bar higher and higher with each new Mission: Impossible movie and is even not deterred by injuries and mishaps. In the most popular movie of his franchise, the Top Gun star jumped from a whopping 25,000 feet multiple times to ace the scene.
Tom Cruise Death-Defying Jump From 25,000 Feet
Throughout his career, Tom Cruise has shown sincere dedication to performing all of his stunts and pushing boundaries to what can be achieved by an actor. While most actors would rely on body doubles and CGI, Cruise has always had a hands-on approach to performing his stunts. Furthermore, he works closely with stunt coordinators and directors to execute the most authentic and surreal stunt sequences.
His commitment to authenticity is such that he often performs a scene multiple times even when the director is satisfied with the scenes. And so it was on the set of Mission: Impossible – Fallout when the Jack Reacher star had to make a jump from over 25,000 feet for a two-minute stunt sequence. To ace the shot, the 61-year-old star made the jump a total of 106 times with an extended free fall technique, used by special operatives for accessing under-threat areas, with a speed of about 220 miles per hour!
To ace the shot, Tom Cruise had to train for months and obtain a HALO skydiver license, which he successfully did. While we expect nothing less from Cruise, what is more, impressive is the cameraman who had to jump backward with him and ace the shot.
Tom Cruise Broke His Ankle While Jumping Off A Building
Performing your stunts, especially at a level that Tom Cruise does often means injuries and mishaps. These injuries are by no means small and often involve breaking bones and escaping death by a hairbreadth.
No matter how many precautions he takes, stunt sequences are not free from injuries. While shooting for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Cruise injured his ankle severely while jumping off of a roof of a building. After the severe impact, he can be seen limping but continued to shoot till he collapsed moments after.
When talking about injuries Tom Cruise has had as a result of going his stunts, fracturing his ankles is the least dangerous of them all. From fracturing his ribs to hanging off the Burj Khalifa, holding his breath underwater for over 6.5 minutes, to hanging off a jet while tiny yet lethal stones kept hitting him, no injury terrifies him or could hold him back from performing his stunts.
