Tobey Maguire Took The Biggest Payday as Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland all successfully essayed the role of Spider-Man in three different Marvel films. Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the trio uniting for an iconic collaboration and is expectedly the highest-grossing Spider-Man film of all time with a staggering total collection of $1.37 billion worldwide. Naturally, this meant that each star took home a hefty paycheck as well. But the intriguing statistic that is now being reported is that it is Tobey Maguire who was the top individual earner for the stand-alone films.

According to initial rumors, Tobey Maguire earned $4 million for his work in the first Spider-Man movie. He received a huge pay increase for the sequel and earned a salary of $17.5 million. It was also reported that he earned 5 percent of the back-end gross. In surprising contrast, MCU’s Spider-Man Tom Holland had a significantly less payday. Holland who made his first appearance in the MCU in the 2016 movie Captain America: Civil War, earned around $250,000 for his work in that film. Following that, he reportedly took home $500,000 for his work in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Andrew Garfield did a little better than his counterpart in his first film with earnings of $500,000.

Was Tom Holland Grossly Underpaid As Spider-Man?

Following a deep dive into the paychecks of every Spider-Man actor, a startling reveal indicated that Tobey Maguire is a higher-paid webbed superhero over Tom Holland. While it is still unclear if Holland’s total earnings supersede that of Maguire, the actor took home less than his predecessor when comparing their first individual appearances.

The discrepancy in Tobey Maguire’s and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man salaries is also surprising considering the difference in the time period of their work. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appeared 14 years after Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker by which time the economic impact of the MCU films saw stars like Robert Downey Jr. taking home staggering paychecks. Tom Holland’s seemingly meager earnings compared to Maguire’s payday 14 years ago indicates that the actor could have been underpaid in the franchise.
