The controversial failure of Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder became a wake-up call for the studio and its heads that the quality of their outputs is slowly diminishing. This is why the company has proposed to step back and cut down their Disney+ releases and focus on bringing excellence instead of bombarding fans with mediocre content.
Despite Thor 4 plummeting and receiving tons of criticisms, director Taika Waititi is still moving forward with his Star Wars project. The filmmaker is on track to fly towards the galaxy far, far away, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Star Wars Is Not Stopping Despite Disney Scaling Back Its Projects
There have been several issues with Disney and Marvel Studios over the past year, with Phase 4 considered the most forgettable and tiresome of all. Star Wars, which has been quiet in theaters since 2019, is doing favorably well on television. A company insider revealed to THR:
“There is going to be a level of rigor on Marvel and across the entire company. Numbers matter now, and costs are going to be outlined and enforced.”
Taika Waititi is still pursuing his own take on the franchise. Disney is also expected to reveal their plans at the Star Wars Celebration in April in London. Several series, such as Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew, are also slated for release in the future. The insider also noted:
“Lucasfilm may ramp up, but it will have to abide by the same fiscal discipline as the rest of the company.”
Despite Disney CEO Bob Iger admitting that the company is suffering from a lack of quality shows and an excessive amount of releases, Star Wars seems to be an exception. The boss said during the company’s earnings call:
“We have to be better at curating the Disney and the Pixar and the Marvel and the Star Wars of it all as well. And of course, reduce costs on everything that we make because, while we’re extremely proud of what’s on the screen, it’s gotten to a point where it’s extraordinarily expensive. And we want all the quality.”
Iger also noted that there is a need to reduce costs on every project they make. While the shows and films they put on the screens are of the greatest value, he also noted that they are becoming too expensive. “We want the quality on the screen, but we have to look at what they cost us,” he added.
A Star Wars Project Will Reportedly Start Production Soon
A report from Bespin Bulletin said that a Star Wars movie is expected to enter pre-production in April or May this year. The said project is slated for a December 2025 release, but no one knows which filmmaker it belongs to. One of the most popular fan theories is the untitled Taika Waititi project. His signature movie style, as seen by fans in the Thor franchise, would truly make an unforgettable Star Wars film.
Other Star Wars projects reportedly in the works include a trilogy from Rian Johnson. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige is also producing his own film based on the franchise.
The Mandalorian Season 3 will arrive on Disney+ on March 1.
