When it was announced that Henry Cavill is leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia and The Witcher show, fans were heartbroken. The casting of Liam Hemsworth in the role just made everyone angry. However, the problems plaguing the show aren’t going to end with a recast. After all, it has long been rumored that Cavill departed because he had issues with the writing team. As a result, many fans don’t want to tune in for the new season. However, there’s a way to solve this problem.
Why Did Henry Cavill Leave The Witcher?
A new YouTube video by Scene Hunter has surmised the reason why star Henry Cavill left the show. The narrator speaks for the fans and has succinctly surmised the myriad feelings worshippers of The Witcher are feeling now. The video aptly says:
“Whether Liam is a good or bad Geralt isn’t even the most important thing right now. The fact is for most fans the series is effectively over because Henry is no longer reprising the role. What makes the whole situation worse is that henry might not have left the series on good terms. His issue with the writing department is something that has been felt by many fans too.”
The video then goes on to describe the general feeling in the fandom of the show since the second season:
“The second season of the series felt like it didn’t stay true to the source material and with a third on the way we think this trend will only get worse especially if you consider that it’s after the third season that Henry decided to leave The Witcher. With all this drama, it’s tough to imagine anyone wanting to continue to support this series.”
The problems with the show’s writing were always felt by fans. But it was verbalized by a writer on the show. During an Instagram session in 2022, Beau DeMayo said that some of the writers on the show didn’t love Andrzej Sapkowski’s source material. As per him:
“You have to respect the work before you’re allowed to add to its legacy. Some of the writers were not [fans] or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.) It’s a recipe for disaster and bad morale.”
But there’s a simple solution to the entire mess that the show has been in for the last 2 seasons and as per reports, is going to continue throughout season 3 as well.
How Can The Witcher Be Saved?
The video by Scene Hunter portrays a simple solution for all the issues plaguing the widely acclaimed Netflix show. As per the narrator:
“Ultimately the best thing Netflix can do right now is showcase a change in the writing team and somehow get henry to agree to come back.”
However, the channel acknowledges that the latter might not be possible because Cavill already has multiple projects lined up. But the question is- will Netflix bring a change to the writer’s room? It seems unlikely, until and unless the company sees a huge drop in viewership for the show.
While season 3 may bring that change, it looks like poor Liam Hemsworth will be caught in the crossfire. After all, not only will he have to act with the subpar script that Cavill had to grapple with for so long, but he might also be trolled by fans of the Man of Steel actor. As of now, it looks like season 3’s ratings and writing will decide the status of Netflix’s The Witcher moving forward.
