Miles Teller has made a substantial mark in the movie industry through his impeccable performances in several critically acclaimed movies, including Whiplash and 2022’s critical and commercial success, Top Gun: Maverick. But it appears that the Whiplash actor doesn’t share fond memories of every commercially successful project that the actor has been a part of.
Over the course of his career, Miles Teller has been pretty outspoken about his experience in the 2014’s sci-fi action film, Divergent. And even though the trilogy went on to garner a substantial figure of $765 Million globally, the actor didn’t have a great time during its production.
Miles Teller was exhausted during his time on Divergent
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miles Taylor expressed his exhaustion during his time on 2014’s live-action adaptation of the sci-fi novel. And considering that the actor was associated with a plethora of projects during the year, it’s reasonable to assume why the movie was taking a toll on the actor, despite having a great experience with his fellow crew members. He stated,
“It wasn’t so much bored as it was … that was my first experience on a film of that length, four months. But at the end of the day, do I love going to set everyday? Yeah. With Divergent, I made a lot of good friends, but it came a month after That Awkward Moment, and That Awkward Moment was a string of four movies that I did that year. I think I was more burnt out than bored.”
But it appears that the fatigue wasn’t the only factor behind the actor’s dreadful period on the sets of Divergent, as Teller went on to reveal that he wasn’t even interested in the project, to begin with.
Miles Teller only agreed to star in Divergent for business reasons
Even though the actor was exhausted after starring in several projects at the time, he shared that he only agreed to star in the sci-fi for commercial reasons. The Whiplash star revealed that he didn’t like the script for the movie and that the prime factor behind his decision to star in the movie was the paycheck and to increase the actor’s fame internationally. He stated,
“I didn’t have an interesting part, and I’d taken the film for business reasons: It was the first movie I’d done that was going to have an international audience. I called my agent and said, ‘This sucks’.”
But despite the actor’s controversial remarks on the sci-fi franchise, Teller didn’t shy away from expressing his gratitude to the filmmakers and his co-stars. And despite the critical and commercial declining returns with every installment, Teller was adamant about completing all the planned movies, which didn’t pan out, as Lionsgate went on to cancel the final part of the franchise.
Divergent is available to stream on HBO Max.
