The first episode of Marvel’s latest project, Secret Invasion is officially out on Disney+. In the ninth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans get to see Nick Fury teaming up with his allies to stop a Skrull invasion.
The start of the show wasn’t the best. The opening sequence of the show was doomed by AI as Marvel utilized it to generate visuals. To make things worse, the director of the show, Ali Selim, previously revealed that he was told to not read the Secret Invasion comic storyline before working on the show. This unusual request by Marvel has certainly invited some criticism.

Secret Invasion‘s episode 1 is officially out on Disney+ and fans got to see the start of the Skrull threat, which forces Nick Fury to come back to Earth. Forget the Nick Fury you’ve known all this time, as the show will dive deeper into the character and explore a new side of him. Several new characters were also introduced while one fan-favorite was lost.
The reaction from the critics wasn’t too bad but keep in mind, they only got to see the first two episodes. The show still has the potential to attract viewers as the show consists of six episodes.
Ali Selim was told not to read the Secret Invasion comic storyline before working on the show
All these years Marvel has always focused on bringing comic book material accurately to the big screen. However, this time, the approach was different. The director of Secret Invasion, Ali Selim, recently revealed that he was told not to read the Secret Invasion comic storyline before working on the show. In an interview with ScreenRant, Selim said,
“When I took on this job as director, I didn’t write the script. So a lot of those decisions were made by Kyle Bradstreet and the other team of writers that we had. The first thing I was told is don’t read the comics. It had nothing to do with what we’re trying to do here. This story was really born out of the electricity created between Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn or Nick Fury and Talos in Captain Marvel. And they said, ‘Oh, we got to do something with that.’ So they found a story that would serve that relationship and would expand the MCU and other characters who are not in the comic books. I think it’s a story unto itself.”
In the show, the Skrulls can shapeshift into whatever solid thing they want, from another living organism to an inanimate object.
Fans reacted to Ali Selim’s statement
The internet is a ruthless place and obviously, people trolled the director and Marvel for their decision. The first episode got very mixed reactions from the audience as the expectations were set too high.
Secret Invasion, which is the first series of Phase Five of the MCU, consists of six episodes, each an hour long, that will release on Disney+ every Wednesday.
