Jason Momoa will soon be returning as the Atlantean superhero, Aquaman in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. He will once again be joined by Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, and more. The film will also see some new faces in the ensemble. Filmmaker James Wan also returned to helm the sequel.
Since the first film made over a billion dollars at the box office, it is exciting to think about how the sequel will do. Well, as far as Dolph Lundgren, who plays King Neerus in the franchise, is concerned, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is going to shatter its predecessor’s record. According to the actor, the sequel is going to be much better since it has a stronger script.

Is Aquaman 2 Going to be Better?
In a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dolph Lundgren opened up about what fans should expect from Aquaman’s sequel. He went on to gush about how everyone from the director to the actors to the producer has given their absolute best to the film before adding that Aquaman 2 will simply be better.
“That whole picture is just a class act. Everybody from James Wan and Jason Momoa to Amber Heard and the producers. I think this one is better. “
As for why the film is better, Lundgren believes that it possesses a much stronger script and the technology has gotten more advanced since the filming of Jason Momoa’s first solo film in the superhero universe. Lundgren also praised James Wan’s work revealing that the director was involved in every little bit of the process.
“I think the script is stronger, and it’s more exciting. The technology has moved forward in four years, so I was really pleased to be a part of it. James Wan is just going to blow everybody away again by this tremendous world that he creates. He’s involved in every little detail, even every little piece of every weapon, and I think it’s going to be great.”
While Lundgren seems so sure that Aquaman 2 will perform better than the first one, Amber Heard’s return as Mera might prove to be a bit of an obstacle toward the goal.
Ever since Johnny Depp won the defamation trial against his ex-wife, fans have been actively boycotting Heard. This includes demanding to remove the actress’ scenes from Aquaman 2. Fans who felt strongly about the situation threatened to boycott the entire film if the studios did not fire Heard.
Of course, Heard is still in the film. Peter Safran once told Deadline’s Hero Nation that the studios won’t react to “pure fan pressure” and will do what’s best for the movie. Do you think fans will actually boycott Aquaman 2?
Director James Wan Agrees with Dolph Lundgren
Wan was responsible for bringing the story to life and as per Lundgren, he also managed every little detail associated with the film. Thus, it goes without saying that Wan has a solid idea about what the sequel will turn out to be.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Wan stated that the upcoming DCU film is going to be “next level” since they are expanding the story. He also added that Aquaman 2 will be a treat to the fans of Black Manta, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
“You know, people love Jason Momoa; people love him playing this role; and people love the action visuals of this space and this world. And that’s what we are doing: we’re taking it to the net level and we are still expanding – and just any fans of Aquaman the character, that love Black Manta, this is the next level and I’m very excited to finally put out there to show them what we’ve been working on all these years.”
Well, looking at Lundgren and Wan’s enthusiasm for the sequel has got us all excited! While sequels often fail to live up to the original’s hype, it will be interesting to see if Aquaman 2 can.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releases in theatres on December 20, 2023.
