With $760 million worldwide, Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder was a box office success, but many Marvel fans got the icks by writer-director Taika Waititi’s goofy humor and the film’s unsettling visual effects. Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, seems to be aware of the criticism directed at his fourth Thor film. In a recent GQ magazine article, he even acknowledged that Love and Thunder was “too silly” for its own good.
Marvel’s recent history has not been smooth. While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a commercial success and got Angela Bassett an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania received some of the worst reviews of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and bombed at the box office with $476 million. But through it all, it seems like Marvel fans have still got their superheroes back.
Marvel’s Chris Hemsworth describes his experience with shooting Thor 4
In a recent interview with GQ, Marvel actor Chris Hemsworth describes what it was like while shooting the new Thor film. Acknowledging all the criticism his recent release is facing, Hemsworth said,
“I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly. It’s always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective…I love the process, it’s always a ride. But you just don’t know how people are going to respond.”
He added,
“It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humor, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good,I cringe and laugh equally at it.”
Eight Marvel films have had Hemsworth as a lead, and just because Thor: Love and Thunder was “too silly,” it doesn’t mean he’s opposed to making more. The actor is not currently under contract for any other Marvel films. Although he truly wants to do “some other stuff for a while,” he might come back if the opportunity is particularly innovative.
