So far, Marvel Studios has brought out some special editions to the MCU, and some behind-the-scenes special series, giving a sneak peek at what goes on off-camera and the process of bringing everything to life on screen. MPower, a four-part documentary series, could also be considered an addition to the list, as it features the actors describing their character’s journey and their growth as empowering individuals and as a superhero. The documentary series, released on the occasion of International Women’s Day, brings Marvel women into the spotlight.
While it does feature a number of powerful women from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it still misses out on some of the major characters and actors who have been a part of the MCU. And fans did not hesitate to call out the studio when they spotted an unwanted face on the official poster of the series.
Marvel Celebrates International Women’s Day With MPower
Disney released a four-part documentary series on International Women’s Day celebrating the women of the MCU. Directed by Quinn Wilson and executive produced by Zoe Saldaña, the series features the female cast members of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Zoe Saldaña from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The executive producer of MPower and the Guardians of the Galaxy star has described the show as a tribute to women’s representation and empowerment. She said,
“We’re enthused to have the involvement of a diverse group of women whose voices and stories will serve as a source of inspiration. Our hope is that this series will ignite meaningful conversations and drive real change towards a more equal and inclusive world.”
The four episodes of the show, The Women of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, and Gamora, focus on the respective character’s evolution. The first episode explores the roots and origin of the Black Panther characters and how the actors brought their characters to life. The follow-up three episodes explore the respective characters they are named after and how far they have come.
However, some Marvel fans called out the studio to represent Scarlet Witch as an empowering woman, despite the massacre she did in WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2. They pointed out how a superhero, who harmed those around her for her own desire, was not only featured in the series but also became one of its leading faces, garnering a spot on its poster.
Fans Are Against Seeing Scarlet Witch in MPower
Fans are not happy to see Scarlet Witch on Disney+ MPower. The poster of the documentary series features Marvel heroes like Miss Marvel, Captain Marvel, Nakia, Dora Milaje, Gamora, and Scarlet Witch. While fans do support other characters being a part of the series, they do not hold the same opinion for Wanda.
The arguments started considering the character’s actions in WandaVision and the extreme things she did in the Doctor Strange sequel. Fans also mentioned how her character is “pretty flat,” and there is “nothing to dig deeper about” her, still the studio included her in the series.
They also stated how the studio missed out on featuring some of the major characters from the MCU, including Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Evangeline Lilly’s Hope, aka the Wasp.
