Making an appearance on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast as part of his promotional tour for Netflix’s The Out-Laws, Adam DeVine put forth an intriguing perspective. He suggested that the rise of Marvel movies and other superhero flicks has significantly impacted the landscape of traditional Hollywood comedies.
According to Variety, DeVine, known for his roles in Workaholics and Pitch Perfect, highlighted the substantial comedic elements present in Marvel films such as Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. These superhero franchises, in his view, have effectively assumed the role of modern Hollywood’s default comedy genre. However, Adam DeVine has claimed that his comments were blown out of proportion and are misleading.
Did Adam DeVine Blamed Marvel For Ruining Comedies?
During the podcast, Adam DeVine shared his perspective on the contemporary state of comedies. He expressed his observations that when watching current comedies, the expected humor and comedic elements often seem lacking.
DeVine emphasized a sense of scarcity in terms of jokes and humorous bits. While acknowledging the existence of quality comedy shows, he suggested that the realm of comedic movies has grown challenging. DeVine went on to propose his theory, attributing this shift to the influence of Marvel.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a fucking comedy,” DeVine said. “Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy… it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.”
Adam DeVine pointed out a significant transformation in the movie industry’s comedic landscape. He highlighted that in the past, numerous studios would release multiple comedies annually, leading to a considerable number of around 45 comedy films gracing theaters each year. DeVine emphasized the frequency with which new comedies used to hit theaters, making it almost a weekly occurrence.
Adam DeVine Hits Back At The News Outlet
Addressing the topic, Adam DeVine mentioned that while he appreciates the recognition in Variety, he found the context a bit misleading. He clarified his stance, noting his genuine fondness for Marvel movies and their appeal. DeVine emphasized that his previous comment was centered around the shift in the film industry, where studios, aiming to compete with Marvel’s massive success, have shifted away from producing mid-budget comedies. He expressed nostalgia for the days when such comedies were a common sight in theaters, conveying his yearning for the comedy genre to regain its presence on the big screen.
“As a guy who loves movies and tv it’s cool to be in Variety but this is misleading. I like Marvel and think these movies are cool. I was saying that studios (in trying to compete with Marvel) have stopped making mid budget comedies. I miss seeing comedy in the theaters!” DeVine tweeted.
He also got support from fans about his comments. His supporters showed discontent over how his comments were met with backlash. According to them, DeVine was speaking the truth about the industry, as mid-budget comedy films have almost disappeared in the cinema space.
