The Equalizer franchise, starring Denzel Washington, is perhaps one of the most liked and celebrated action movie series. His rough and tough character with the gradual reveal of his backstory, coupled with some of the finest action sequences in the history of cinema, Equalizer is captivating. While the majority of reboots and TV-to-film adaptations and vice-versa turn out to be complete failures, The Equalizer is one of the few that hits home with its exceptional storyline.
While Denzel Washington turned out to be the unexpected action star, the director has some very disheartening news to share regarding him, just days ahead of the threequel’s release.
Director Shares Disheartening News Regarding Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington has been portraying Robert McCall, a former spy since 2014. Even since then, he has been labeled as one of the best action heroes of all time. His enigmatic portrayal was perfect for a character that has been with the fans on TV for a long time.
Not only did he give the character a sense of originality but he also effortlessly brought back the same complexities and characteristics of Edward Woodward’s Robert McCall. Furthermore, the movies were filled with some of the most impeccable action sequences, which made the movies entertaining to watch.
Now as the threequel is scheduled to be released, the director, Antoine Fuqua has some very disheartening news to share. In a recent interview, Fuqua was asked,
“People are saying this is going to be the last movie, at least for Denzel. Do you feel that it’s the perfect round-up of this trilogy?”
To which he replied,
“Oh yeah, this is his swan song. This is it.”
While it seems rational that it would perhaps be Washington’s last movie, since the third part is expected to give him the closure and happy ending he deserves, fans still expressed their disappointment to say goodbye to a character as beloved as his.
Denzel Washington Is A ‘Reluctant Destroyer‘ In Equalizer 3
The Equalizer franchise is empowering, vigilante-based, vengeance-filled, and a complex blend of justice and morality. But it is also gruesome, vile, and brutal. Fuqua revealed that the third movie would have Denzel Washington’s character interacting and taking a break from all the violence, for a while at least. But in the end, the movie does a whole 360 round as it comes back to portray Washington as an even fiercer character.
“The whole thing is when the music shifts in the beginning, when he starts to kill, it’s like a monster inside of him. This thing that he’s trying to hold down. So the idea was that he does become a monster because of these bad guys. It’s like a reluctant destroyer, you know? So, at the end, he was like, ‘I’m just gonna finish it.’ So he had to go really dark. Almost monstrous.”
And we couldn’t wait to witness what Washington has in store for us.
The Equalizer 3 will be in theatres on September 1, 2023.
