Margot Robbie is the beloved Australian goddess who everyone knows as DC’s Harley Quinn. The actress shot to fame after starring in The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio and from then on she didn’t have to look back anymore. One of the many tentpole projects that adorn her filmography is The Legend of Tarzan (2016).

The movie grossed an underwhelming $356 million on a $180 million budget. While audiences didn’t exactly love the film, many praised lead actor Alexander Skarsgård’s diet and training to look the part of the protagonist. Along with Skarsgård, his rumored ex-girlfriend, Margot Robbie too tried to stay healthy. But that didn’t go as per plan.

Most films require their lead actors to look muscular. The Legend of Tarzan, mounted on a budget of $180 million, was no different. Alexander Skarsgård, who played the titular rough hero, geared up for the film by consuming tonnes of calories every day. How much exactly? As per USA Today, “the Swedish-born actor spent three months eating 7,000 calories a day and weightlifting, followed by two months of cardio and six small meals a day.”

He did it all to reduce his body fat as much as possible. The actor explained that he didn’t want to look huge like a bodybuilder. Instead, his goal was to develop the muscles and attain a body shape that made sense for Tarzan. He said, “The goal wasn’t to get huge. I didn’t want him to look like a bodybuilder, I wanted every muscle to be there for a reason and have a purpose.” But it wasn’t easy to do so as the actor missed eating.

He lamented, “I just missed food. I would always finish my little box and be like, ‘OK, three hours until my next meal.'” Margot Robbie too added her little diet story. The actress said that she couldn’t follow the plan properly and even failed to continue her self-imposed dry spell for more than a week.

I could maybe diet for a role briefly, but I couldn’t sustain it.” That’s not all. The Babylon actress also tried to stay off from alcohol for a week, but that proved to be even more difficult for her.

Robbie explained, “I got to Jan. 8th and I was like, ‘This has been the worst week of my life. I will never try something as stupid as this again.'” However, for Alexander Skarsgård training for The Legend of Tarzan was worth it because the character was a hero to him.

The actor said, “As a kid, I always saw Tarzan as a superhero. He’s like a superhero with no gadgets or gimmicks, there’s no mutation or cape. I was like, he’s got nothing! Just his brain and his fists! And he still can beat anyone! I love that.” Even though the movie didn’t set the box office on fire, it is a favorite of many Tarzan fans.

The Legend of Tarzan is streaming on Netflix.
