The 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie featuring Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day opened at the box office last week. It has been the talk of the town for the past few months, with many believing that the film would flop at the box office. Contrary to their expectations, the animated movie is skyrocketing at the box office, and so far, it has grossed over $300 million worldwide.
It has also become the biggest opening of 2023 and the second-biggest debut of an animated film, taking over the 2016 film Finding Dory. Considering its success at the box office, the 53-year-old actor, who portrays the main antagonist in the film, is already discussing the ideas for a potential sequel for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Jack Black’s Ideas For a Potential Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel
The main antagonist in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Bowser, the leader of the turtle-like Koopa race. The American actor-comedian Jack Black voiced the character in the recent adaptation of the Nintendo game. The film follows Mario and Princess Peaches on their mission to stop Bowser from taking over the world.
Considering the film is doing great at the box office, the makers could soon announce a sequel. And the Jumanji actor already has plans for who could challenge Mario in the sequel to the 2023 film. During his recent interview, he mentioned that he would love to see Pedro Pascal as the villain in The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel.
He also suggested that the next villain could be even more powerful than Bowser. When asked who that potential villain could be, the Gulliver’s Travels star said, “Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.” Wario was introduced in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as the final boss.
The character is allegedly a childhood rival of Mario and has remarkable strength. Wario is considered much stronger than the game’s protagonist, and Black has some ideas about how Super Mario Brothers can defeat him in the sequel.
Mario And Bowser Could Work Together in the Sequel
During his interview, Jack Black also shared ideas for what could happen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel. While he has no doubts that Bowser will return for the sequel, he thinks that the makers would not focus on the same antagonist again.
Talking about his experience working on Kung Fu Panda movies, Black said, “You know, I did a few Kung Fu Panda movies, and it was a different villain every movie.” And the Goosebumps star believes that the makers of The Super Mario Bros. could also do something similar.
As he suggested that the sequel could have an even “more powerful, more evil villain,” Mario could need some extra hands to defeat him. And he may even turn to Bowser for help. He also agreed to the idea of turning the Koopa leader into a good guy, taking a similar approach as the Fast & Furious franchise for its character Deckard Shaw.
“Then [Bowser] may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil,” the Tropic Thunder actor added. Although no official statement has been made regarding a sequel, expectations are high considering the film’s success at the box office.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is playing in theatres.
