Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises around the world, that has several sequels, series, animated movies, video games and spin-offs. The fans of the franchise like to talk about different perspectives and have theories of their own. However, every fan of the franchise would agree with what James Cameron had to say about the first six films of the Star Wars franchise.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a disappointing film, as the film of catastrophic flaws such as plot holes, poor cinematography, and a lack of direction and creativity, failed to meet the expectations of the fans and critics.
What Did James Cameron Say About The Star Wars Franchise?
In an interview on YouTube, the interviewer asked James Cameron about his opinion on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh film of the Star Wars franchise. James Cameron didn’t want to comment on the film and went on to elaborate his statement, by labelling the first six films as more creative compared to the seventh film. Here’s what James Cameron said about the first six films of the Star Wars franchise:
“I don’t want to say too much about the film, because I also have a lot of respect for J.J. Abrams. I have to say that I felt that George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination. This film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters. See where they go with it [Episode 8].”
The fans of the franchise would agree with what James Cameron said about the seventh instalment of the film, as he pointed out the major flaws of the film which hurt the popularity of the franchise.
How did Disney Maul The Star Wars Franchise?
Ever since Disney bought the rights to the Star Wars franchise, the movies have been perfunctory, and none of the new sequels has even come close to the success of the original six films. And fans have felt that the sequel trilogy is lacking creativity, and vision and the movies are reckless which contradicts the ideas of the franchise. Here are four reasons, how Disney is killing the Star Wars franchise:
- Force Heal Ability: In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey could be seen using a new ability called Force Heal, and it was treated as if it were a common skill every Jedi possessed. This logic was contradicting because Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi turned to the Dark Side because he believed that the Jedi couldn’t help him save his wife, Padmé.
- Nerfed Lightsabers: The lightsabers in the new films are treated as if they’re toys. As a fan, who has watched the original film it feels absurd to not see dismemberment with the lightsabers. Also, in the original films the lightsabers were strong enough to cut through metal doors, yet in the new films, we could see multiple instances where they aren’t as lethal as they used to be.
- Replicating fame in a short time: In an attempt to replicate their success with Marvel Studios. Disney announced a Star Wars movie every year, which seemed exciting during the announcement, but after watching the new movies that excitement faded from the minds of every fan. The Star Wars franchise believed in the “Less is more” ideology where George Lucas would take a year or two to develop a sequel that increase the expectations of his fans for the next movie. Fans of the franchise believe that releasing so many films in a short period of time has diluted the franchise’s quality.
- Lack of vision: Last but not least, lack of vision has drastically affected the franchise. It has resulted in a mixed reaction from the fans of the franchise who are praising and criticising various elements in the movie. Moreover, a lack of creative vision has led to misunderstandings between the director and the studio, which led to delays and changes in various projects.
How Did Star Wars Remain a Successful Franchise?
The first six Star Wars films are extremely popular, even in 2023 people enjoy watching the first six movies over the new chapters, and this was possible due to George Lucas’ imagination and creativity which was evident in the films. George Lucas had a great mixture of sci-fi and with action and adventure, along with the introduction of relatable characters who had great character development as the movies progressed. Moreover, there were fantastic dialogues and epic battles which made the original six Star Wars films, a timeless classic.
