The James Bond franchise stepped into the entertainment industry in 1962 with Sean Connery’s masterpiece Dr. No and has been going strong ever since. Throughout the six decades ever since, it has played a crucial part in the industry with several stars stepping up over time to continue the legacy of Agent 007. Yet, it came to an abrupt halt after Daniel Craig decided to retire from the franchise, being the last actor to play Bond.
However, Edgar Wright, who walked out on the Ant-Man project after initially being the one to direct it, has once again raised hope in fans with his wild pitch for the peerless spy’s future, all the while hinting that it won’t be Henry Cavill or Aaron Taylor-Johnson who can revamp the multi-billionaire franchise.
Edgar Wright’s Pitch For James Bond’s Future
After Daniel Craig walked out from the James Bond franchise in 2021 following the release of No Time to Die, fans were devastated and worried for their favorite character’s on-screen future. But Edgar Wright’s pitching for the same has ignited hope in them once again.
Sharing his views about how the franchise can be revamped on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the original Ant-Man director said,
“I think Daniel Craig has so made an indelible stamp on that franchise that I think you have to go in a slightly different direction. Because I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by continuing in the same vein, and I would certainly think that it would be interesting to try and – I mean, I do have a take, which ever they ask me, I’ll definitely pitch it to them. [Laughs] So I’m not going to say it on the podcast.”
From his words, it is evident that he is more than willing to put forth his ideas if Agent 007’s franchise asks. But this time it won’t be the names that fans are desperate to hear to play their favorite spy.
Edgar Wright Hints At A Very Different New James Bond
Although not spoken directly, Edgar Wright did hint that the names that have been in speculation to play the character going forth like Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson aren’t the ones who can actually help revamp the franchise. Continuing in the interview, he said,
“But I do think that, when I sometimes see some of the names being bandied around, I can’t quite see it, in terms of to me they feel like Daniel Craig 2.”
He further shared how this new James Bond would be blatantly different from all the previous ones, and it wouldn’t be just in terms of the storyline.
“My theory is that the Bonds have got to be like dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and I think you’ve got to alternate.”
Nonetheless, a lot has happened since Wright’s pitching, including Bond’s co-owner MGM being acquired by Amazon last year in 2022 and producer Michael G. Wilson still assuring fans that ‘there will always be a Bond’. Thus, in what direction the 007 franchise will end up heading, only time can tell.
