The 31-year-old actress, Shailene Woodley in a 2014 interview with PEOPLE opened up about her favorite moments while working with Ansel Elgort in The Fault in Our Stars. She plays the role of a cancer-stricken teen, Hazel, with Elgort portraying the role of her on-screen love interest, Augustus.

She described her love scenes with her Divergent ‘brother’ to be her favorite moments in the film. She stated,

“It’s very different than most love scenes in young adult films. It’s treated with integrity. Often times our society looks at teenagers and sort of discredits their love like, ‘Oh, it’s cute. It’s puppy love. They don’t know what real love is.’ And you look at adults and you go, ‘Are you actually happy? Is this real love?’”

She chose to look into the depth of their love story which was her personal favorite. While many celebrities find their intimate scenes uncomfortable, the co-stars were cozy with each other due to their bonding after working in another series, Divergent.

She continued to share how her bonding as siblings in the sci-fi franchise, The Divergent Series,  helped them in developing a great bond which was later shown in the coming-of-age movie. Working with Elgort at the time on two projects gave her artistic space.

“There’s something really beautiful about working with someone again, and again, and again because the more you get to know somebody on a personal level the more free you feel artistically.”

She continued,

“I think that if Ansel and I hadn’t known each other from Divergent, our relationship in this movie would not be what it is.”

Even the Tokyo Vice star mentioned a similar thing by sharing how their friendship helped them in creating a comfortable zone for one another. He told Bustle,

“Immediately we are totally comfortable which is nice, because sometimes you do love scenes with people and you have to kiss them and you have to be romantic and it could be very awkward. But because we are such good friends at this point, we totally understand one another.”

Their bonding incredibly helped in enhancing their chemistry which was highly praised by film critics. With immense critical acclaim, the film grossed $307 million worldwide.

The Fault in Our Stars is available on HBO Max.
